TBI

Postby Kev442 » Fri Dec 29, 2006 10:41 pm

I've been considering the 4.3 swap complete from an s-10 to an Hbody for awhile, I think 180HP and OD with TBI would be a great driver.
But it recently occurred to me while doing research that TBI on a stock 305 would make for good driveability. I've got a spare 4.3 V-6 TBI lying around, and I'm wondering where a TBI differs from V6 to V8.
Does a V8 TBI for 305 have bigger injectors?
Does a TBI pulse in concert with the ignition or does it just rattle can fuel based on air flow?
I see kits advertised for a grand that look like slightly modified GM Vortec kits, heck it seems that buying an S-10 with a blown motor or tranny would yield about everything needed for 2-300 bucks.
Anyone here do this for a living?
Thanks in advance.

Here's what I know from reading up on my S10 which has a 2.8 TBI.

I know that I can improve airflow going into my engine by upsizing to a 4.3 or V8 TBI as long as I machine the intake holes larger, since the larger TBI's have bigger bores. So what I've learned is that the wiring is the same, I can plug a bigger throttle body into my current harness. The only differences are the bigger bore, and bigger injectors.

Seems like you're facing the same issues someone wanting to put a V8 in their S-10 would face--what V6 parts can you keep, etc. You can find tons of this info on http://s-series.org and http://v8s10.org

Maybe it's an easy job to get a V6 S-10 and fit the parts to a V8, but it seems like you'd be better off pulling a V8 TBI setup off a 3rd-gen f-body V8 or full-size pickup.

I personally have a Holley aftermarket TBI setup I bought used for about $150. However I have no experience with it yet...

Your post hits close to home because I've often considered putting an LT1 in my S-10 then putting the low-mileage 4.3 V6 into a Vega or other small car. You know, after I ever get my first Monza project done...

Thanks for the input guys. I wish I could find a V8 TBI cheap, but I haven't seen a 3rd generation FBody available for parts in years around here, they are like Hbodys (OK, not THAT rare!)
As for V8 pickups, I'd have to look around a little, but most pickups aren't retired until mega miles and mega rot in these parts, so thats why I'm digging around on V6 to V8 differences. I had a friend sell his '92 Chev 4 x 4 with 160k on it and rust, and at $1800. he had 22 phone calls the first day!
