Bumping this thread to the top for any more improvements. I have been currently offered a modified Pontiac 400 by a freind so I am looking into this swap as an option.

After reading through this thread again, I want to get/build a 301. Even if it is just the turbo model! :D

Tailsside,
Go with the 400 if it's cheap.
You also have a bit more room in your Sunbird than I have in my Astre.
I'm working on my Sunbird right now to get it rolling and out of the way so I can get the Astre in the garage.
I'll probably start off with a stock, rebuilt 301 just to get it quickly running again with a Pontiac V-8 engine in it.
Then work on a 301 stroker. I've acquired the main parts to a TPI system to use as the basis for a custom intake manifold/setup. Yeah, EFI. Won't be easy.

Sounds awesome. EFI is definitely the way to go with any modern build. My friend is iffy on selling me the engine though so I figure it would be better to try the 301 build you guys are laying out here. Plus I love EFI just because it is what I know well and work on, Im going through a Vocational school in my area for my last two years of high school (Senior this year) and I would like to think Im pretty good.

Go for it!
You'll have to fabricate the base with the TPI setup on ANY Pontiac V-8. The intake port layout on the Pontiac is similar to Chevy. So, just a set of mounting flange plates on the tuned port side and another set on the head side with tubes between them. Probably some support structure, too. The Pontiac has a separate valley cover. The front water crossover can be fabricated separately from scratch or from a manifold. There is a rear water passage that I haven't figured out yet. Haven't thought much about it, either.
If you are going with the short-deck block and some good heads, then a manifold MUST be fabricated, anyway.
But, there are other ways to put EFI on a Pontiac V-8.
Dare to be different. Don't let peer pressure force you to conform with the status quo.

Right on man! Glad this thread bumped. Good luck with the projects, guys.

What does "modified" mean BTW?

It's from that stupid ass movie "Dude, Where's my car?". The 2 guys wake up with tattoos on their backs, one says "DUDE" and the other says "SWEET". It's what they are always saying. Anyway, the one guy asks the other "what's my tattoo say?" and the other guys says "sweet, what's mine say", then he says Dude, what's mine say, and it goes on and on.........told you it was a stupid ass movie.
