I agree.
OldsStarfire wrote:Of course - it's not an H-body any more.
I disagree.
But, the jury is still out' deliberating' over the install-ability of a Pontiac V-8 in a stock H-body chassis.

Why didn't you just rebuild the Pontiac?
Do you have any old pics of the Pontiac-powered V-8 Vega?

Just joined this forum as I purchased a 78 Sunbird wagon. My "Poncho Pup". Have a collection of Pontiacs including 64 gto, 71 formula 400, 66 Star chief T1000 among others. Trying to learn abit transforming their engines and drivetrains to possibly bring them back to life in a useful way. Some for street some for race. Sunbird had a 215 Buick in it that ran very well, I bought it without motor. I had 2 running 231's and wanted to learn about fuel injection conversion so am installing the best one in the Sunbird now once I find the right parts n pieces for the H manual trans setup. Will then do a fuel injection conversion hopefully to tbi. Maybe toy with a turbo as my buddy does that. Eventually the "Pup" may grow to become a "big dog" with a Pontiac race motor in it ... one I have thought long and hard about ... sure it will need frame enhancements, rear enhancement and conversion to automatic. It should be very fast. Trying to return the "Pup" to service as my training course summer worker be for the moment.

Hello, all.

Just joined the forums moments ago, but have been visiting for the last 5 years. In 2011 I purchased a 1978 Monza wagon and a 1976 Astre coupe on the same day, from 2 different sellers, with the (possibly malicious) intent to "clone" the Chevy into a Pontiac. Being a longtime Pontiac fan, having a Buick V6 in my pseudo Pontiac just didn't seem right, so I started keeping an eye out for a 301. About 2 years ago, one popped up on CL locally for a good price, so I snagged it and proceeded to rebuild it. Anyway, fast forward to May 1st, 2016, VICTORY IS MINE !!! The 301 has been successfully installed. I've got lots of little stuff left to do before I can fire it up, but I just had to share where I was at so far. Here's a few pictures. I'll post more as soon as I can.

I guess I'll have to figure out how to post pics later

Ron.

Tried again this morning, but it's saying my pictures are too big. Do I need to use photobucket or something??? Help, please.

Congrats on the Poncho install. I'm a huge fan of the Pontiac engines.... especially the 301. I've owned 2 of them (in Firebirds) and my current one is a turbo.

You can post pics by resizing to under 256 kb and using the upload attachment button at the bottom of the post
or.....
You can use the "img" buttons at the top of the post

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=28612

See this sticky in the General Discussion section........ it explains how.
My post (down around post #14) gives a step-by-step tutorial how to resize pics using "Paint" program on any windows computer..... using just about 5 or 6 clicks of the mouse.

Pictures of the rather simple engine brackets and the modified driver side engine perch. the brackets are made from 3/16" by 2" by 3" angle iron, gusseted for a little extra insurance, and shaped to clear the raised edges of the engine perches. A '69 Firebird manifold was chosen for the driver side as the dump location of the 301 manifold was not going to work at all in this chassis.

Stay tuned, more to come.

Welcome aboard Ron, that is a nice clean looking little wagon you have there! For the spot where you had interference with the "Rag Joint" another answer is to switch to a "Borgeson" or "Flaming River" or similar u-joint as those styles are quite a bit smaller.
Lots of stuff here incl. designs: https://www.borgeson.com/ and of course you can empty your wallet here: http://www.summitracing.com/int/search/ ... cation=int [if you have any left, I'll take any left overs :D ]

Thanks, Harry. I think I'm OK now at the rag joint, but if the motor squirms around and my gap tries to close up, I may have to shave a little more off that boss. As you can see, I already had to get a flaming river u-joint at the box end as I didn't realize that the P/S coupler wouldn't work. From the looks of it, that bulky coupler probably would have been hitting the manifold anyway. My goal is to have the car on the road by the end of June, then I'll find out how good my fabricated motor mounts work. I'm using medium density urethane biscuits, one on either side of the engine brackets with a 7/16" grade 8 through bolt. Seems pretty rigidly mounted so far !

Thanks for your interest, Ron.

Awesome Astre Ron!
Way to resurrect my favorite thread, too. :D
I can't believe 10 years have gone by since I started this.
I've not done much in 5 years - life got in the way.
Anyway, post pic of the whole car in the Projects section - love to see it.
