It says in the Haynes repair manual
that you should pack the housing of the oilpump
with petroleum-jelly.
after a teardown.
Do I have to use pj?
does it work with ordinary grease?
Anyone with experience?

Umm, I think that is just to keep it from rusting if you are not going to have it put back together in the near future. I know that is what is saving my SBC's cylinders from going to hell.

It is to prevent the oilpump from pumping air
instead of oil, with engine failure as a result.
after a closer look in my repair manual
grease is not a substitute for petroleum jelly.

It's to prime the oil pump. Without it, it stands a chance of not pumping any oil at all. Grease doesn't dissovle as readily and my clog some of the oiling galleys. Use PJ, as it will dissolve after a short time........... or so I've heard.

I always prime the pump with a tool I made up to go into a electric drill, You can buy them, or just cut off the handle of a long flat blade screwdriver. just make shure you turn it in the correct direction, and prime untill the oil comes out of the rocker arms. The PJ trick was an old technic, it works, but I am always a bit leary of putting anything other than oil in the system.
