60˚ V-6 Swap

Postby res0o7eb » Wed Jun 11, 2008 2:04 am

Anybody done a 60˚ V-6 swap into an H-Body?

No Matt, I'm not talking about doing a V-6 swap in 60-degree weather. :D

2.8? 3.1? 3.4? Seems like an easy swap from a F-Body or a S-10/S-15/Blazer/Jimmy.

I am thinking about a 3.4 V-6 swap into my Monza Spyder.
Except no pushrods; An LQ1 3.4 DOHC V-6 from a FWD mid 90's W-Body - turned in the 'proper' direction, of course, to power the rear wheels as God intended for all automobiles.
Sort of a 60˚ V-6 90˚ swap.

These guys seem to know something about these engines. http://60degreev6.com/forum/forum.php

Apparently, the pushrod 60˚ V-6 FWD engine is a popular swap in MG's. Somebody sells a bellhousing to mount a GM or Ford T-5 to it.
http://www.killerbv6.com/driveline.html Click on the 'Click' for a pic.
If it fits in a MG it certainly should fit in a 1978 Monza. Ya think?
From my research the 3.4 DOHC block has identical bell-housing pattern.
There's also remanufactured 700-R4 transmission on ebay for about $429 + shipping. (NOTE: I can't find the listing, right now)

Crazy? Yeah.

Stupid? Uh-huh - well ... post away and tell us all about why you think so. Except, you can't mention the obvious - it will cost more and have less power than a Small Block Chevy. La la la la la la la la - I'm not listening to that!!! :bored:

Different? Absolutely!! And the best reason to do it. Not sure I will.

I always thought that skinny 60deg would be a great swap for a Chevette; never considered it for an H-body. With all the 2.8 S10 trucks out there, and even 4th gen Camaros with pushrod 3.4s, it shouldn't be too hard to find the parts to make it fit. Does not the dual cam 3.4 share bellhousing and mounting provisions with the normal blocks? I know these "tiny" motors can make some power, there's a local drag racer with a 2.8 Camaro that runs high 13's/low 14's in Stock Eliminator trim- cam, headers, gears and slicks; no other mods.

I've often thought those engines would be great for an H. I have a 3.4 l in my Minivan and it pulls that tank around pretty darn good. I've had no complaints about power, it even does well when loaded to the gills for vacation, 5 - 8 people and all our crap, including a 15 cubic foot carrier on top. It winds up quickly and moves that sled pretty darn well. Put that in something that weighs 1000 lbs less and it should be a great ride! Its also capable of pulling 25 - 28mpg when commuting.

It seems to me that Hot Rod or Car Craft did one of these swaps shortly after the 2.8 was introduced, and the engine looked like it was made for Vegas. I don't remember much other than they made their own engine mounts and exhaust manifold interference was none existent. A newer 3.4 would make a Vega scoot along pretty good.
As for the DOHC 3.4, I've heard more people curse them than praise them. My son has one in his Grand Prix, and he's not all that thrilled with it. He would ultimately like to replace it with a 3800 (buick V6) but would use a pushrod 3.4 before swapping in another DOHC motor. These engines are also quite a bit wider than the pushrod engines, even rivaling the SBC for width.

My sister had an Olds with a 3.4 DOHC in it. She junked the car but I was thinking of pulling the motor for an H body. I know it was wider than a 60° OHV V-6. And Tom, 60° weather is just about right for that kind of work.

I think Hooker use to make a 2.8L V6 swoop for Chevette's. There's definitely an advantage in clearance with the 2.8L. A 2.8L with a 5 speed trans, and the hydraulic clutch would be a nice combo. I've seen some good performance parts on line still available.

I was peeping that killer v6 site. They sell a 240hp 3.5. WOW! That's pretty hot. They say they can build for 280hp too.
At 350 lbs. that's pretty great. The engine would sit farther back too for better weight distribution.

I wonder what they are doing to them to get the bigger numbers.

Matt,
My wife's car is a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme SL with a DOHC 3.4. She likes it real well and she's got a lead foot. It scoots.

Ken,
The 3.4 DOHC seems to be a very popular swap by the Fiero crowd. It would be interesting to understand why your son doesn't like the LQ1 in his Pontiac.

Nic,
The 3.5 is a new GM engine first produced in 2005 according to the Family Tree on the 60 V-6 web site. But, they are using a custom ECM and a bigger 'nostril'.

The new 3.6 DOHC V-6 is an all-aluminum engine and RWD!! Interesting. The 2.8 DOHC is just a smaller variant.
HEY HEY HEY Look at this - http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/pts/711665310.html - A 2.8 DOHC V-6 out of a Cadillac CTS for $275!?! Just called, it is a complete engine and may even include an uncut harness. I know nothing about this engine, so more research. Stay tuned ...

Engine Code = 'T" and LP1. It is a Variable-Valve Timing motor - sounds complicated.

From GM Media - http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServ ... docid=6383
2005 Cadillac CTS : http://media.gm.com/division/2005_prodi ... index.html

I wonder if I can find an AY6 Aisin 6-speed for it - cheap, of course.

It looks like these engines have a low-mounted, driver's side power steering pump (I think that's what it is) that would cause some interference.

I don't think the 3800 is a 60 degree engine.... but since Fiero Swap was mentioned..... check this one out.
300 hp 385 lb-ft torque.
If this car was few thousand dollars cheaper..... I'd own it.

I'd love to see this swap. I'd start with a 3.4 / 5 spd out of a late model Camaro and put it into a Vega set up with Cosworth like suspension and big brakes for a cheap road racer.

Yah, I'm seeing that, too. A pushrod motor might be OK. Crane makes a cam. I'm certain that some good valvetrain components are available along with bigger valves. Obviously use the later aluminum heads with the 'splayed valves'. Wow, they are really cheap, too on ebay. I'd rather put a carb on it initially.

Sorry about that.
It is the 3.4 DOHC V-6 engine from a 90's FWD GM W-Body - Chev Z-34 Lumina, Buick Regal, Olds Cutlass Supreme, Pontiac Grand Prix, etc.
I saved the pictures because I think this is a cool engine. 8) But, I stole them from this ebay listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0250106633

The transmission is from a late 80's, early 90's S-10/S-15 or F-body.
The transmission pictures came from the following listing, but somebody already bought it:

Seeing that motor out of a car it doesn't look like it is as wide as a SBC but I bet it's taller. It should still fit pretty well. So a 5 speed out of a 2WD S-10 or F-body should bolt up. But what flywheel?
