Not to re-kindle an old thread, but did anyone do this? I have been tossing it around the melon for a while because, the chevy lumina (and malibu)is a solid 250thousand mile car. they get 30 miles per gallon. and both have the 3.1 which is nothing more than a stroked 2.8. so I could use a block from s-10 or camaro 2.8 the guts from a fwd and a 200r4trans. not to mention the aluminum heads from the fwd 3.1 and the pc from a cavilier camaro or s-10 are extremely adaptable user friendly (programable) and include data logging and a highway lean function for even better gas milage.. just some thoughts. Timmy,
I haven't done this. Yet. I almost bought a 3.4 DOHC V-6 a couple of years ago - they are difficult to find around here.
I ended up with a 2.8 DOHC V-6 out of a 2005? Cadillac CTS.
Yes, definitely put the much better aluminum head from a FWD engine on the RWD block.
I would be interested to know if a 200-R4 transmission will bolt up to the 60˚ V-6. I thought ONLY the 700-4R was available with the 2.8/3.1 RWD 60˚ V-6 engine which uses a unique transmission/bellhousing mounting pattern.

I just figured since the 200r4 was most common in the s-10's that it was put behind the 2.8 but doesn't matter either way to me they are both an overdrive auto with a set of 3.23 gears I should be able to get better gas than the 300 thousand mile 1997 malibu I am taking my son to school in now,, and much cooler of a car.maybe I'll put 2 turbos from either the f***s2.3 turbo coupe or chryslers 2.2 lebaron both of which are inexpensive, but should flow enough air for the 3.1.Timmy

Timmy,
The S-10/S-15/Blazer/Jimmy were equipped with a 700-4R behind the 2.8 60˚ V-6 (and some of the later 2.5 I-4 engines - these had the same bellhousing pattern).
See a pic of one on Page 1 in this thread.

works for me, I like the 700r4 as well, it has a 3.06 to 1 first gear and overdrive. they aren't too complicated so this is good news.Timmy

It did pretty good, its just the 2.8 out of the Fiero with the 700r4. Put this together back in my young years. I set it up with the SDS efi system. If i were to do it again it woud get a turbo for sure, good candidate for a turbo i would say

I think i was getting around 25mpg all around driving

ok gotta ask how you managed that. I thought the 2.8 in a fiero was a transverse engine and that car looks rear wheel drive which is the longitudinal engine. Timmy

Correct, it is standard mount/drive. Are you thinking that the fiero block is different from the other 2.8 blocks?

yeah I did, cause all the 3.1's have the starter on the wrong side when the block is from a transverse mount motor. unlike the2.8 from a rear drive vehicle am I wrong about this for the fiero's. Timmy, just wondering cause fiero motors are cheaper than s10 motors :th:

Your probably right, iirc, this shortblock is actually from a camaro and the he top end was added when the engine went to EFI, so i guess it is a bastard motor anyway :D

cool, thats the way I'm gonna do it but gonna use the internals, aluminum top end and puter from a modern 3.1 gm' built in a highway lean function to the 7730 computers but you have to turn it on cause thanks to the epa they weren't allowed to operate in the highway lean condition to pass the standards my goal is gas milage. and I am hoping it will feel peppy too, my cosworth had a max of 130 hp and it felt really peppy. so thats what I am hoping for.Timmy
