Buick V8 in an H body?

Postby OldsStarfire » Thu Jul 02, 2009 11:42 pm

Has anybody put a Buick V8 in an H body? I would think it would just bolt up in place of the V76 and you would just have to relocate the radiator.

Fits like a glove - I don't think he even had to move the radiator!

Are you talking about the all-aluminum 215 cu. in. V-8(or the similar iron 300 cu. in. V-8), the Buick Nailhead V-8, or the so-called 'big-block' Buick V-8 from 1967 and on?
The 215 cu. in. V-8 swap has been done many times.
I don't believe anyone has put a Nailhead in an H-body.
A member here on h-body.org has put a 'regular/big-block' Buick V-8 in a Skyhawk. Looks great.

Nope, it is not a nailhead. Nailheads have the distributor in the rear of the block. http://www.rodandcustommagazine.com/how ... index.html

I was thinking 68-75 350. After all a 231 has the same bore.

I thought there was a guy in Kansas that had a Buick 350 in his Skyhawk. I searched and couldn't find anythink. It may have been from the V8Monza days.

I think his name is Roger. he goes by ks_skyhawk on this forum, but not very active. (just 6 posts...and fairly old ones at that :( Last visited: Mon Nov 12, 2007 3:19 pm ).

This thread shows photos of his Buick 350 install (its the last post in the tread).
The swap appears very clean, and he also has PS on the car. Unfortunately there is no specific information.

Reid (Barebonesracecars) did this too. I haven't seen him on the list for a long time. He built a frame like I did too. I think the Buick 350 is a great choice. Much lighter than the other 350's out there. In all iron form it's only 450lbs.! With aluminum heads you could get that down to almost 400. Pretty damn good.

has a great community for these guys. Look in the smallblock section.

I think Reid has a 327 Chevy for now but was talking about putting a proper Buick in his skyhawk. I didn't know they were that light. There is a 455 for sale around my place for $200.00 What is the differences between that and a 350 size wise?

The 455 is relatively light too at 600 lbs. all iron. I know it's also smaller dimensionally than other BB engines. I'm pretty sure it's dimensionally the same as the Buick 350. Interesting. I think it's due to the different engine designs. The 350 is a deep skirt block. The 455 is a split crank block like the small block Chevy. It was planned to be a compact and lightweight engine. It has it's problems because of this too. Cool engine though.

The Buick 455's and 350's are NOT dimensionally the same; they're close though. I believe the 350 is actually about 1/2" LONGER than a 455 . . . figure that one out . . . the "Big Block" is smaller than the small block! LOL!

Thanks man. I was confused by the reference I found about that too. Do you know how much bigger it is?

Now I'm confused, 'cause I've found some conflicting information. Let me go measure . . .
