On the OEM starter, the large purple start wire goes to the inside terminal closest to the block while the outer terminal would normally be empty if the car has an HEI distributor. On older models with points distributors, there was a small yellow wire that went from the extra terminal to the + of the coil. If you're buying a newer style starter without the extra terminal it should be a direct fit without any re-wiring. Not sure what there would be hooked to the outer terminal on your Monza; none of my wiring diagrams for that year show any connection.

OK just like i thought there are two small wires going to either side of the solenoid(one on each side) the one away from the motor(closest to the header) is purple and the one on the block side is black or could have been beige or orange (i may have changed this wire color )......my new starter only has one small wire hook up and i need to delete the one closest to the block ....does anyone know what this wire is ....it was a 75 chevy monza with a 4 cyl in it.... i hope someone with knowledge will answer this time because i need to race this car tomorrow ...im also going to try and just remove it and see what happens........george

Did this car have a rear window defroster? If so, there is a wire that feeds this off of the starter (because of the amperage load).

Unless you have a distributor with points in it, you can ignore the extra wire. Just hook up the purple to the single terminal on the new starter. When I was talking about "inside" and "outside" wires, I was referring to a V8 application.

Since all GM's since 75's had HEI why would there be a extra wire for a points distributor?

Clyde- that is the big question; maybe it was added by a previous owner. I was under the impression that we were discussing the yellow V8 car in the avatar pic. Another question is why the purple wire is on the outside instead of the inside.

Yeah, that's what I mean, the yellow 75 Monza. These cars came with HEI's so there should not be any extra wire for a points distributor. Or do you mean the wire was added by a previous owner? If so, leave it off and see what, if anything, doesn't work.

the car did not have a defroster and i had a hard time installing the starter. then i messed up my exhaust gasket because i had to drop the header on that side to get the mini starter in there. i was able to properly shim up the starter and got it to turn the car over without that wire so in the morning i will put the header back on and try to start it and hope for the best sorry for two post but i was panicking because i need to race it in the morning but know it looks like rain .so maybe no race....george
