Transdapt front mounts to low?

Postby 67shovel » Fri Jul 12, 2013 9:38 am

Building my 73 GT wagon and I have a problem with my Transdapt kit. It acts like the front mounts that go on the frame of the car are to low. I've got a SBC with the Milidon vega pan on it and in order to clear my steering center link I have to add around 1-1/4" spacers on top of the rubber blocks that rest on the top of the frame mounts. It fits OK with the spacers but I can't figure out why I should need them. The frame mounts bolts to the drag link so that height is pretty much set on that side. I welded the steering box mount on level with the other side so I would think those are correct. I do have a homemade rear crossmember on the back of a 700R4 and that could add to the problem as it might hang down an extra 1" in the rear. I'm getting contact with the 700R4 to the trans tunnel on the drivers side around 8" back from the firewall causing me to have it hanging low to clear it. The plan is to pull the mo and trans and "adjust" the tunnel with a BFH, stick it back in and recheck.
Anybody else run into this w/the Transdapt stuff?

Thanks,
Roger

what is the angle of the motor(crank centerline). you may have dropped that way down to get tranny clearance in tunnel and went down too far. shimming it up 1 1/4 inches can cause lots of other clearance problems. art

The motor is tilting down 3 to 4 degrees to the rear. The spacers on the stands are .90 tall. With the motor sitting there, my steering shaft fits/ pierces through my Sanderson block hugger headers perfectly. I can still put a 3" aircleaner (drop base) on top of the Holley and still have hood clearance.
I guess I don't really have a problem but how can I be off so much? Must be the rear trans mount height. I'll mess with that and see what happens. The motor tilt is about right isn't it?

Thanks, Roger

roger the closer to level the better off. too much tilt and it changes fluid levels(carb, tranny, etc). you can shim the back up with some steel spacers. i would try for about 1-2 degrees max(down in rear). good that the headers clear. art

I thought most people ended up doubling the rubber spacer on those to get the engine to clear the steering linkage etc.

hey gerb usually if you double upon that rubber the steering linkage can hit header, headers (2129) hit the lower control arms and you run out of clearance in tranny tunnel and you can make your pinion angle get crazy. this is just the things i noted. art

i have the transdapt mounts in my astre and had to do the same thing with the extra spacer .just recently i was looking at the hooker front mounts (same style as trans dapt but more expensive) and hooker has two different part numbers for later and earlier cars i think the trans dapt mounts may have been copied from the later car hooker mounts causing clearance issues in the early cars.i had to put both rubber blocks on top of the frame mounts(two blocks each side)and a metal spacer on top of that on each side to clear the centerlink. i do not believe in cutting or welding on steering parts in case of a possable safety issue.
