You did set the point gap with the rubbing block on the tip of the cam, not the flat side? When you spin the engine over, you should see the points open and close as the cam turns. If you probed the negative side of the coil (with the wire going to the distributor) with a test light, the light should pulse on and off as you spin the engine over.
Beyond that, you may need to find an old-timer to come by and look it over.
