1976 Astre Safari - Water Pump Ceased up

Postby M brand 505b » Tue Dec 31, 2013 10:36 pm

Hello,

I was driving my Astre back from work this afternoon and after I got off the highway I heard a little ruckus going on in the engine bay. I was only a couple blocks from a gas station so I parked it there and sat for a couple seconds. Before I knew it, black and white smoke with billowing from the hood so i shut off the car. It seems like the water pump went out and ceased the pulley because i cannot turn the fan by hand and antifreeze was leaking from that location. The other issue is I think it fried the belt attached to the pulley because that is where most of the smoke was coming from (it smelt horrible). I have two questions:

1. Where should I purchase a water pump from?
2. Where do I buy the belt that rode on the water pump or what is it called?

Thanks,

Rockauto.com should have everything you need.
If you need it faster check your local parts houses.

What engine do you have, the 140 OHC or the 151 OHV?

Hello,

I believe it's the 140. The car is all original.

Thanks,

I think Rock Auto should be able to help. If it's the 140, the belt is the cam belt and you have to make sure the crank pulley and the cam pulley are in the correct position when replacing the belt. The water pump is used to tension the belt. Do you have a shop manual? There is a specific procedure to installing the belt and water pump.

Thanks for the information. I ordered the water pump and belt from rock auto and should get them next week. I have the manual and will for sure use it when changing the belt!
