powertrain swap

Postby vegame » Thu Jan 16, 2014 1:02 pm

I found a low mile 2006 sts cadillac writeoff (High Feature 3.6 v6 255 hp with a 5 speed auto).I haven't had a chance to look at the car yet. It is a DOHC engine, would it fit under the hood in my 75 vega?
Has anyone heard of a swap using this powertrain?

I haven't heard of anyone doing this swap. Will the owner let you do some measuring? Many of the newer engines use a cast aluminum oil pan and h-bodies cross members often get in the way. My guess is the pan would need to be modified.

X2 on what Dick Said, also many of the OHC engines are very very wide!!!!!! and most have the throttle Bodies over the intake manifold adding to the height issues that the cast oil pans create. More than likely you would have to fabricate a tube Lower Engine crossmember to clear the factory oil pan.

Not saying it could not be done, but unless you have a lot of fabrication skill, and the shop and tools to do it, it may be more than the average backyard mechanic can handle.

The good news is that you can get programming done for that computer AS LONG as you stay with the transmission that came with the engine.

If you want to swap it out for a manual then you are in for a world of hurt. (speaking from experience)

I agree and let me add cash,
I looked at this engine as a swap and did some rough measuring and as mentioned just too wide to fit the H body engine compartment. Not saying it couldn't be done by a well seasoned builder. The STS Cad motor is pretty cool.

The computer /electrical would be a challenge that interests me and I have done a fair bit of fabricating in the past but was hoping to find a fairly easy (modern) swap that weighed close to the original
powertrain. I wanted to make a daily driver out of it. There is a 3.1 multiport efi swap on youtube does anyone know about that ?
