What type of engine mounts for SBC in Vega

Postby robert123 » Wed Feb 12, 2014 2:37 pm

Putting a SBC into a 1973 Vega hatchback -- it has the stock Vega power steering unit.
Will be using stock Monza cast iron exhaust manifolds.

Do side engine mounts interfere with changing spark plugs etc.?

Are front engine mounts even an option .... p/s unit may be in the way?

If you're using stock exhaust manifolds you shouldn't have an issue with any style motor mount (so long as its for an hbody Appl). You run into potential issues when you run certain headers with certain mounts.

I dont believe a v8 monza style power steering pump will work with front mounts.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

No, it won't. I had to go from the front mount to side mounts when I put P/S in my Vega.

Here's some photos of front engine mounts in a Monza.
Is that a power steering unit?
Are Monza's p/s different than Vegas (taller, etc.?

Yes that is a Power Steering Box in the pictures, and the saginaw Box is the only one that GM had in the 70's. There were some internal differances, and some input Shaft differances like SAE or Metric, but they are all the same external dimensions.

And they mount in the same spot in a Vega or Monza. The issue with the front mounts it how to attach the power steering pump, as the pump rquires some of the same space taken up but the front engine mount assembly.

Hope that helps

Hi Robert. A problem you'll encounter that might make that difficult is when the engine is sitting in its proper place there is nothing really there to mount your truck mounts to. They'll be forward in the engine bay in relation to where the factory mounts go. See attd. Its a pic with the Monza v8 engine mount frame plates in. Where the sets of 2 holes are in it on each side is the location of the CSB mounts. Not saying it cant be done but I believe it will be tough. Have you looked for v8 frame plates? Get a set of those and Bob Gumm mounts or the like and you're set with the engine right in the factory position.

I hated those waterpump style mounts when I had them. Limited you to a mechanical waterpump

I ended up changing mine to a motor plate over this winter and just notching it to clear the gearbox.
