Which intake will fit under the hood?

Postby marz » Sat Apr 05, 2014 10:47 am

Hey guys,

Rebuilding the 350, and i have a choice to make--

Performer PRM Air Gap Manifold, or the Performer EPS Manifold.

Will the plenum in the Air Gap cause issues with hood clearance?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

dave. go to search in upper right hand corner and type in RPM Air Gap manifold fitting under hood of vega. talked about this in some detail about a year ago. im real sure the rpm air gap fits. the other manifold is a real low performance intake and usually quits at 5500 rpms. air gap is the best all around intake out there(for up to 6500 rpms) art

Hi Dave!
I use a Performer dual plane alloy intake and the Holley w/o spacing...the hood on the Sunturd sits low but doesn't touch the fastener on the custom K&N large dia. air filter...be cautious of the fastener, I use a "ny-lock" nut on mine, I had a chrome 3 wing custom fastener but it touched the hood so the ny-lock was better, and stays tight. Hope this helps, take care and best of luck with the fresh mill! :th: Ron.

Is there a difference in Carb height betwwen the RPM and the EPS? I want to up grade to the RPM. EPS just barely fits now.

marco if some of our members have these intakes, they can put a straight edge on carb flANGE AND MEASURE DOWn TO THE FRONT (OR ) REAR OF INTAKE , WHERE THE FRONT AND REAR RUBBER GASKETS GO, AND MEASure THESE DISTANCES AND YOU WILL GET AN EXACT MEASUREMENT OF EACH INTAKE. edelbrock could tell you, and so could jegs. let us know what you find art

With regards to the newer intakes I can't tell you what will fit but I can say that you should do some careful measuring before choosing any intake. I have a older style Edelbrock C3BX 2 plane intake on my 75 Monza. This manifold was patterned after the old Z28 "hi_rise" intakes from the late 60's. Combined with a Edelbrock carb and a 14" air cleaner clearance is very tight. The air cleaner just touches the hood insulation and this is with a "drop base" air cleaner and a very short 2 3/8" tall K&N air filter element. I even had to mill down the air cleaner nut for clearance. So, bottom line is there is not a lot of hood clearance on these cars so do be careful and take everything into consideration including any carb gaskets, insulators or anything else that will raise the carb up.

Marco,

According to Edelbrock, the EPS measures 3.74" at the front of the intake and 4.80" at the rear, using a straightedge across the carb pad. The RPM is 4.20" at the front, and 5.25" at the rear. Looks like it'll raise the carb up about a half-inch.

As i mentioned, I am using a drop base air cleaner which lowers the air cleaner down around the carb. There is no way I could use a regular straight across one.
