Buick 3800 V-6 crank damper torque

Postby barebonesracecars » Thu Jul 24, 2014 7:09 pm

Can someone tell me the correct torque value for the crank damper ("harmonic balancer")?

Also, need to know the correct procedure to remove the damper...there is a cover over it, underneath the crank bolt. Hard to see, but appears there are threaded bosses back in there to use a standard 3-bolt puller.

Is this correct?

Thanks guys.

Reid,

Balancer torque is 100 lb-ft + 76 degrees (torque to yield).

Mitchell doesn't show me a removal procedure. If there are threaded holes to mount the pulley, I would use a regular harmonic balancer puller.

Thank you. Yes, there are threaded holes...they are hard to see because they are back inside, but I figured they had to be there. (6mm)

Finished the job today.

No, sorry. Replacing a blown 3800 supercharged engine in a 1999 Bonneville.

First experience with a 3800 and had no shop manual. My Skyhawk originally had a 3.8. I didn't realize how much they had updated those engines.

Got a good spare supercharger if anyone needs one.

Sorry,
I just read this thread today. Ya, it takes three special length and size bolts as you found out =) I reused the dampener bolt and torqued to 150lbs.

Hmmm...
I am putting a Series II Supercharged motor in my 75 Astre. Link to my project journal.

Definitely like to see any pictures you have of the install. Especially the TB location?

Ya, the 38800 motor is basically a completely different engine from the 3.8. Nothing interchanges and I have had to fab up a lot of stuff to get it to fit the H-body platform.
