target master engine info wanted

Postby beakerztoyz » Tue Oct 07, 2014 10:41 am

Hi guys, i just bought a monza spyder yesterday and it has a targetmaster engine in it.. the place i bought the car from dont have a ton of info, anyways i know they were basically replacement engines from back in the day so i am not expecting it to be anything special. I was however wondering if they came in diffrent sizes like was there a target master 305 ? or some cubic inches other than the 350? thanks

I think they offered a lot of different Target Master engines at one time. Six's, small blocks, big blocks. I think they were new engines, and very reasonably priced back.

"beakerztoyz", It has been awhile since the local Chevy dealer parts counter has had the "Target-Master" poster up, but I seem to remember that you could, at one time buy a 305, a 350, (SBC) a 366 and a 454(BBC) Target-Master these are all I remember on the poster, but I seem to recollect that the 366, and the 454 (these were both truck engines) weren't available at the same time, that was a long time ago though! I hope this helps! Harry (it is possible that a 292 may have been on there but as a young "Male Gearhead" unless there was a scantily clad buxom beauty on that aforementioned engine you couldn't prove it by me! )

They offered a 6.2 liter diesel engine too. I remember the 292 straight six, and think a couple of V6's as well. A buddy swapped his 2.8 liter V6 for a 3.4 in his S-10 Blazer but I can't remember if it was a Goodwrench or a Target master engine. New engines, built in Mexico.

Targetmaster uses the pre-1986 four-bolt casting molds with two dipstick locations; pre-1980 on the driver's side and post-1980 on the passenger's side. This engine was produced in Mexico since 1981 as the Targetmaster 350, and now the GM Goodwrench 350.

so targetmaster engines had 4 bolt main blocks? and yet according to lots this is worse than the 2 bolt block i have from chevrolet in my other car?

on another note, weather round here got nice for a few days so i did more poking around on that engine and it turns out that the intake i thought some moron had painted to make it look aluminum... actually is an aluminum intake off a l82 corvette engine kinda strange but i suppose lowrise aluminum intakes are tricky to find in the aftermarket.

just a quick note, a lot of the target master 350s had 993 intermediate 1.94/1.50 74cc chambered heads. these are heavy casted heads that carry the 3rd hole to fit all exhaust manifolds. these heads do not carry the traditional casting marks so you must use the casting number to id them.
