400 SBC with Hooker Headers#520-2135

Postby kenimpzoom » Mon Dec 22, 2014 1:13 pm

What are your guys thoughts with a 400 SBC with the Hooker Headers#520-2135 ?

Assume I have the engine built to rev to 6000 rpm with 1 3/4" long tube headers.

Any idea how much power I will loose with the 1 1/2" x 31" Primary Tubes and 2.5" x 8" Collector?

For a street motor, good torque at a useable RPM range is more Important than big HP numbers at high RPM. I had Hooker 2135's on a 5500RPM 400 SBC in my old 76GT; it never felt like it was missing out on any power. I'm sure a Dyno would show a drop in peak HP with the 1.5" primaries, but as thay say "we don't drive dynos, we drive cars"..

Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

Look at it this way, the 2135's are going to flow a whole lot better than stock exhaust manifolds. I think people get too wrapped up in some of these small things, on a drag car it's different where races are won or lost by .001 second. On a street car you will never know the difference......

My thoughts are the same but different, you are going to NEED TRACTION before you worry about the 5 or 10 ponies you give up on top, and the skinny pipes will help out down low, like that "TORQUE SUPER MONSTER" is going to need that! Again that is going to exacerbate that traction thing! Well unless that is your evil intention, to rid the earth of all non-burnt rubber :burn: :burnout:  Harry

The larger tubes add about 15 HP at 5000 to 6000 RPM.
It will reduce the torque below that range, which may be helpful on light cars with minimal traction.
