Stock Type Radiator

Postby vegadude57 » Thu Jan 29, 2015 6:44 pm

Anyone have any luck installing a stock 2 or 3 core radiator from another application? I don't mind doing some alterations but just really don't want to buy an all aluminum one. There has to be something out there that fits. I am running a very mild 350 so no wild HP numbers.

Most other GM car radiators have 19" tall cores that will hang out the bottom and or hit the hood.
S10s and 86 Corvettes used a 16" tall core but they are way too wide to fit between the frame rails on H-bodies.

A V8 Monza would fit,but they are getting hard to find and probably not any cheaper than the new aluminum ones.
You can get a Griffin 16" x 26" aluminum radiator for $173 shipped http://www.summitracing.com/parts/gri-1-25221-xs/overview/

I used a V6 Monza radiator for many years in my Vega. It's taller, so I did have a little interference with a K-member bolt to the RH tank.

I used the aluminum one from an 86 corvette in my last vega build, but I had to make a little more room on the sides at the bottom

I used a 69 Camaro radiator in mine . Yes it did hang down a little bit , but not enough to be a problem. I did have to fold some seams back between the frame rails at the core support to clear the tanks , but it fit fine. I made some drop brackets for the rad and it barely stuck down below the valance. No ground clearance issues.

a 16" x 26" will fit between the stock frame rails without cutting, it will clear the hood and not hang below the lower valance at all.
You will have to get or make upper and lower brackets to hold it in place.

This is what I used (Griffin), I have a stock '72 Vega radiator that I had recored with a double core, it cost as much as the new one.

Generic gm 24x16 from summit or eBay fits or aluminum fiero will fit.
Either should cool better than old copper and brass.

Fiero radiators have a thinner narrower core with 1 1/4" inlet and outlet and the trans cooler on the drivers side.
They are cheap but not ideal.
