sbc balancer concerns

Postby duckblaster67 » Thu Mar 19, 2015 12:11 am

My son & I are swapping out a 262 V8 for a 350 & was wondering if there are any issues with using the large balancer as far as clearance, etc.? Also curious if there is a nice bolt-in replacement radiator available since the original is long gone?

The balancer face is in same position on either balancer - pulley position is not altered. The larger diameter balancer should just clear stock swaybar with all the stock brackets in place ( the braces that go from crossmember to the radiator support) and non sagging mounts.

it may or may not clear the timing tab, which is spot welded to timing cover. chevy had balancers from 6-8" diameter, so they may have spot welded the tab at different positions for balancer to clear. you can get aftermarket timing pointers that attach by way of timing cover bolts. just remove the stock timing tab, and when buying the new tab you will need to tell the parts place what the diameter of your balancer is art

Art, we're swapping the entire engine not just the balancer...so tab will be correct! :th:

In California, the 350 was available in the Monza, and all 350's had 8" balancers, so therefore it should not be a problem. As to the Rad, if you can find a two core aluminum one that will fit, you will be better off than with a 3-core brass one.

Thanks Spence, you don't happen to have a part # for an aluminum rad that everyone's using... do ya? :?

Sorry, I don't know the part # for a direct fit replacement rad, but someone on here must. I have a "generic" 19.5" high x 22" wide Summit radiator; I suspect that it would require quite a bit of cutting and fabrication to fit in the stock location.

an ideal size would be about 18 inches high and 24 inches across. no cutting would be necessary, just some bracket fabbing. get one with fins on side, and its just about a bolt on.. 26 inches across is slightly tight at very bottom corners of rad support. i had to slightly grind in this area to get my ron davis (26inch) radiator to fit, and the 19 inch height sticks down a little bit so i can clear the hood. my radiator cap is on the side to give a little more cap clearance with underside of hood. look in Speedway catalog at the ron davis radiators. very reasonably priced and well made. art

other than the griifin radiators that bob gumm has I have not seen a new curved neck radiator for sale in years. Get a clean set of end tanks and get a new core built or spring for the griffin.

Or just grab a generic 24x16 aluminum and build a solid pipe that clears with some rubber on both ends. Heck I just ran straight neck v6 rad with no issues.
