Unfortunatly I don't think you will find a "direct Bolt in" modern engine. Even the Echo Tech 4 cylinders require Modifications to the K-member and steering componants, Not to mention Oil Pan, Engine mount and transmission bolt pattern. Your 72 makes it easier to mount a different transmission as the 71-75 Vega's use a 4-link rear suspension so you do not have to worry about what to do with the Torque arm on the 76-77 cars. But it still would require some fabrication.
About the only Almost Bolt in option would be a 77-78 Iron Duke 4 cylinder. But it is not a modern engine. But the parts are available to mount it in your Chassis.
Good Luck, if you find something that will work please let us know. Always glad to be proved wrong in these areas!!!!
