76 140 auto versus 71 140 4 speed

76 140 auto versus 71 140 4 speed

My original 71 140 4 speed burns a lot of oil. Nearby is a good running 76 140 auto. Does an auto trans engine work in a 4 speed car or is the back of the crankshaft different to accomodate the clutch versus torque converter? Thanks

The cranks are the same, just switch the four speed parts over after removing the auto flex plate/torque converter. If you haven't done this before be aware the torque converter is full of trans fluid.

You may need to install a pilot bushing in the back of the crank shaft to engage with the 4 speed input shaft.

If your '71 engine is original and a 2bbl, hang on to the camshaft. The '71 2bbl cam was hotter than any other factory cam.

Meaning i woukd have to drill a space for the pulot bushing or just install one in the already open hole? Thanks

Thanks for mentioning that, I didn't! The hole will already be in the crankshaft for the pilot bearing.

Bill, good point on the cam, at the least for resale. The '76-'77 140's used hydraulic lifters, I don't know if the early cams will work with them.

I am pretty sure you can use a solid lifter cam in a 76/77 head as long as you use the solid lifters, but not the other way around.
