Hello again,

I just bought an unknown "duke" out of a junkyard , the guy knows nothing about this engine . I have a 1977 Duke with the distributor up front just like the old nova motor 153.

This guy says it is an Iron Duke , but I gotta say that the front distributor hole is cover over and so is the fuel pump hole is covered up . it has a Monojet carb

1 barrel . But the Distributor is located on the passenger side but it is located at the Rear of the Block ????..looks like HEI????

Any idea what i bought??????

Joe

The HEI distributor for the 79-80 151 iron duke is at the rear on the passenger side, but the carb was a Rochester varajet 2se 2-barrel and used a mechanical fuel pump.
The 151 was used many many years thru the mid 80's.

What color is it painted?

All 79 and up Iron Dukes have a valve cover that straight on one side , scalloped on the other side.

May be a Mercruiser or Canadian Astre Motor?

Some HBodies did come with electric fuel pumps.

Later crossfire Dukes had a rear distributor and block off plate for the oil pump drive gear which is up front .

thanks for the info again , I did own a 1969 Nova with the factory 153 just like the photo , torque drive automatic two speed , 32 mpg , but pretty slowwww.

this motor I bought cause it has a small block chevy bellhousing and flywheel I need for my 77 ASTRE duke , small block pattern on block ......

and this motor is a cross flow head design , what really threw me was the Monojet on it that looks original , has HEI delco distributor too

once again thanks for reading and helping me on this !!

Could be a postal Jeep motor also, as I've read that they came with the 151 although I haven't seen one.I did own an 80's 151 equipped AMC SX4 with a 4 speed and the bellhousing was different than the one in my Monza.

If it's a crossflow head, it isn't actually an iron duke. It is a 151of Pontiac design which they initially used in the final year of the Astre. It would also be updated and used to replace the sad little Isuzu engine in S10 trucks. That 151 you have has been used in bunches of different platforms both fwd and rwd. It is the foundation engine for the Pontiac Super Duty 4 cyl engine raced extensively in the late 80's through to around mid-90's. It's tough and responds very well to performance mods. I just sold an 80 Monza that had one of these in it. Great motor.

The Jeep 4 cyl shares the same bellhousing pattern as a Chevy 2.8, they made it that way to continue using the same transmissions that were behind the early small Cherokees. The Jeep motor is also a great one that can be adapted to an h-body by using a trans from a 2.8 2wd s10 or Camaro. The later 4 cyls they put in Wranglers actually has more horsepower and torque than the carb'd 258 AMC inline 6.

If you need the two into one exhaust downpipe, I have one along with the second pipe that goes back to the converter.
