Postby doughnut » Tue Sep 05, 2006 12:36 pm

hey guys... new to the site and new owner of a 1980 low mile (34k)town coupe (auto)with great running 3.8 v6. i found a 1977 town coupe with a 4.3 v8(auto) at the local boneyard. can anyone list for me exactly what to ask them for from the v8 for the conversion.i plan on a 350 when i find the right one but need to know what parts i'll need off the 77. also can i use my exsisting rad, drive shaft, tranny? just bought a 10 bolt posi so i wont need that...thanks for any and all help...DOUG

There will probably be a number of small items but at minimum you need the V8 frame & engine mounts, I would also grab all of the the accessories including pulleys, all brackets, oil pan, exhaust manifolds, fan, accelerator cable and bracket. You may also need the flywheel, torque arm, driveshaft etc. There are a lot of little differences between drivetrains. Possibly the wiring harness too. I'm sure some other folks will chime in...............

Don't forget the radiator if its a Power Steering car, it has a special outlet on the top.

You may want to snag the front springs as well, depending on if yours are sagging or not.

both cars are pwr steering so i will grab the radiator and fan shroud.my v6 springs are not sagging ,the car sits a little high it seems ,so i dont think i'll need the springs. and my mechanic said theres a 350 tranny in the v6 so i wont need that either..thanks Doug

Just incase you haven't noticed yet we have an excelent FAQ with some detailed info on the V8 conversion. here: http://h-body.org/library/hbodyfaq/index.html
-Chevy Monza '76 2+2 V8 262ci (old) -> 355ci (oil problem) -> 355ci (piston broke) -> 350ci (current) ... LOL
-Opel Kadett E 1985 1.2Litre (Back up, had a broken condensor :P still need to find replacement accelerator pump membrane...)

Other things I would grab:
When you get the oil pan make sure you get the dipstick &tube and the little aluminum guide for the battery cable under the front of the pan.
The spark plug wire holders on the drivers side around the back of the head and underneath the exhaust manifolds.
I'd check and see if it has the large anti sway bars.
If the waterpump looks like its been replaced and its cheap you might want that too.
Get the springs. The v8 will add alot of weight .

Edit: forgot about the tranny. You can't use yours, the bolt pattern is different. You may need the tailshaft housing off the v8.

Doug, the 3.8 is a Buick motor, it has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than a Chevy motor. So, no, you can't use the old trans. Sorry. But you will need the tail shaft housing to bolt on to a Chevy Turbo 350 so you can still bolt up the torque arm.

What do I need ?

Seems to me , getting the whole car at the bone yard might be the
way to go. You never know what little pieces you need untill you get
there, and running back and forth can become tiring !!!!

That sound a tad rich for a bone yard specal. Or its in awsome shape.
I live in Canada and the last boneyard car I saw, was 79 hatch and
they wanted 700. for it no papers.
Im courious as to how much there going to charge for the parts you
do want.
good luck getting them for a good shake.

i think they realize these car are getting hard to find out here and a v8 is even harder. the car is complete and might still run. and yes i'm nervous about the prices that they'll come up with ...thank goodness for ebay i'm stockpiling some good stuff for the conversion.
