I once organized a "Q&A rally" for f-body guys. One of the questions was, "Did any factory f-body have a 4-cylinder engine?" Most got it wrong! Talk about sweeping something under the rug...

Q&A rally: Basically you follow some route and when you get to an intersection, you answer trivia questions and your answer picks the next route. Winner has the most correct answers and total mileage closest to the mileage traveled if all questions answered correctly. ALL paths lead to finish line so everyone makes it back.

I saw a 4 cylinder Camaro autocrossed years ago. The driver eventually trophied at the nationals with it. (No small feat). He ran against my Vega in H/Stock. I beat him probably 6 of the 10 times we ran together. I could out accelerate him, but he could beat me in the corners, as well as out brake me. The guys name was Dominick Manzer.

Very cool, man. Makes sense. I bet the weight transfer was really balanced.

Thought this was a neat thread on the old Pontiac 151.
Well, actually, some cool pictures and some interesting CAD models of the SD4 and the Cosworth head.

EDIT: Here's an interesting post in the General Discussion forum regarding this engine:

EDIT: This link here is a pic of two Cosworth-headed SD4 engines. For some reason, the admins at Penock's Fiero Forum don't like 'hot-links'.

There is a Camaro 151 for sale near me. I was thinking about picking it up and find an H-body to put it in. I've owned a few 151's and 140's:

76 Astre 151 non crossflow
79 Monza 151 crossflow
80 Monza 151 crossflow
87 Celebrity 151 TBI
76 Vega Wagon 2.3/auto
77 Vega Built 2.3/4 speed

I always wanted to put a 151 TBI engine in a Vega and run a rear mount turbo for 200-225 hp. I'd run a T5 non world class (for the 2.95 1st gear)and a set of 3.08 gears. I love the idea of a four beating V8's but the shear power of my LS1 tells me I may not be happy for long. I did have a lot of fun with all my 4 cylinders. The fastest one I had was a Vega 2.3 with iron liners bored over .125" and a ported head with bigger valves, 390 cfm four barrel, and a header into 2.25" exhaust. I beat a T-bird turbo coupe with that combo. Unfortunatley I did not build it and I sold it before I knew any better.

Good luck

Bill

Jeez Bill. I didn't know you could build a 2.3 like that. Pretty cool. I like the idea about the turbo. I built a real screamer turbo car. It made around 230 hp, so similar to what your talking about. I fragged the trans in about 2 months! LOL! It put a real smack down though. Lots of fun.

By rear mount turbo are you talking about one of those kind that mount at the back of the car?

I wouldn't mind having an early 3rd-gen Firebird with a 151 in it. Build it and turbo-charge it.

I am assuming those were wet liners with that overbore.
That would be a 150 cu. in. 'square' motor (3.625 bore x 3.625 stroke). That is super cool!
If I remember correctly, the stock Vega 140 is a 3.500 Bore x 3.625 Stroke.
Is it me, or are there more than a few 4 cylinder fans here?

Oh come on. Don't start. I'm already having a hard time figuring out if I want a 231 or 305 for my daily driver. Now you got me thinking of a turbo 4 banger.

By rear mount I mean mounted in the rear where the muffler goes. STS makes a universal kit that could work. I contacted that guy that has the Camaro pullout and he still has it. I also have a chrome valve cover for a 151 non-crossflow. I can't remember what shape it is in. I'll try to post a picture of it.

Count me as a 4-popper fan....... I can't believe I've converted.

Well, not totally.... I still plan on the 215 V8 going back in the '72. But I love the 2.3 in the '73. TURBO would rock!!!
