Looked like an engine out of a midget race car til I saw the starter. Musta been a drag motor. I doubt the header would fit an H-body.

Ok guy's stop thinking small. Get the 181cid marine engine and turbo it. Still 4 cylinders but more cubes. A guy on the Inliners web site has turbo exhaust manifolds for these. If you need a new head they are making them right here in the USA. Yes, you need to find someone with a plasma cutter (unless you already own one) and cut the oil pan around the rails and turn it around to make a rear sump but, SO WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!! With a little huff and puff this could be a 375hp or more engine. (SBC territory) Gutted interior and some sticky tires you could beat a lot of V8 cars of all varieties. :D

Randy, I think the 153 Nova oil pan would work? But would the rods and pistons hold up ? Doug in Az 8)

Randy,
Believe me, I am listening to you. I have done a little research on the 181 cu. in. "Mercruiser" since you last mentioned it.

Found this site on vintage midget racing:

Considering the Seattle area is big on boating, I'll bet there are a few of these motors lying around.
Here's a local marine shop with a presence on ebay:

I also didn't realize how inexpensive NEW turbos are. So many choices.
Yeah, I am thinking about it. Megasquirt and an intercooler, too. I need to get a little smarter on the technology.
I think my Sunbird is the perfect 'canvas' for this swap/add-on.

Doug; the new engines are 1 pc rear mains older stuff will not work except to cut the rails off and weld it to the new pan rails. As far as rods and such, I don't know if the have the same rod pin diameter as the small block but powder/metal rods narrowed to fit would take some abuse. The older inlines have 2.00" pins but these just might have the SBC 2.10" pins. Also they came from the factory with an 11"/163 thooth fly wheel.

res0o7eb; the manifold is made in Brazil. VERY good quality casting! Tom Lowe is the man behind these eBay finds. New heads are made to very exacting quality standards so they should hold up to lots of abuse and they don't have siamesed ports. If ya need flow remember, they can take 2.05" dia intake valves just like the V8 SBC since it too has 4.00" bores.

like I've said, I'd be doing this too if it were not for having 2 V6's for my Vega. (yea, I still have it)

We had a customer at our garage give us an "Iron Duke" marine engine for scrap. The block had been welded before. My boss kept the pistons because they were flat tops and he's going to put them in his S-10 2.5. I wonder if that might have been a 181? What's the difference, bore, stroke, both? I wish I would have had this info before because the rest of the engine is long gone now.

Matt,
The 181 is a 151 stroker engine. Same 4.00" bore.
The stroke is increased from 3.00" to 3.60".

If that engine was a 181 and my boss puts the pistons in his 151 that should lower the compression to about 5:1:lol: Should have checked the stroke. I asked if he wanted to keep the crank but he said he had a few good cranks. Oh well.

They don't show the port side of the head, but they mention that they have three types available:

The one on the LEFT is the pre-1991 big port - and therefore, desirable - head.
Valve sizes are 1.94 Intake and 1.60 Exhaust!

The short block that was given to my boss looked just like that. It had the "ribbing" on the bell housing area. Did the 151 have that?

Tom , I'd ask them how much HP that performance motor makes. Doug in AZ 8)

I have access to a few 181 cores....I have a buddy that works on fork lifts and they run them in those....I think they have steel cranks too.

Hes got 3 just sitting around and I thought about this thread when we where pulling a motor out of a fork lift.

Im sure with the right rod combo you could use a regular 350 or 383 piston and ring set forthe rebuild....the bottom end is all 151...duno what the rod length is though because the 181 uses the same pistons and crank as the 151.

I also have an old turbo sitting around and was thinking real hard about it.

If someone is interested....i could talk to him....probably $100 or so.

God bless
