It LIVES!!!! and its dying..... Well at least the original trans is dying. It has the 200 Metric trans in it and it can't take the new found power.

Don't know if you remember but mid summer I tried replacing the stock intake with a performer and Edelbrock carb, and got stuck trying to remove the distributor. Well since I've been laid off, I've had a bit more time to work on it, fortunately I had all the parts and only needed some nickle and dime stuff to get it running again.

After getting it running and fixing a huge vacuum leak from using the wrong carb to intake gasket, replacing the Catalytic converter, and tuning, the trans is suffering big time from the new found power. It is starting to slip in drive going up hills . I'm not terribly surprised as it has kinda been sliding into gears since I got it running, but now its gotten REALLY bad. Fortunately I have a THM350 out of my dad's Malibu, that is built pretty strong sitting under the bench.

Here's where we are now, getting better, but not done by any means.

Your car looks good in all white. Very distinguished looking.
On the other hand, that distributor is just plain nasty.

Well, rigged up a bracket for the shifter and took it for a ride. With the new trans and the StreetFighter torque converter the fun factor is off the chart!!!!!! I didn't go far, 3 - 4 miles, but wow I LOVE IT! I don't have the tach hooked up but it seems to cruise fine at 55 mph.

I know the 305 isn't a monster power maker but it sure is fun to drive.

After the sudden death of my dad I kinda lost the momentum on working on my Mirage. But here I am again finally back at it and I've got a big issue to tackle. As I pulled it out of the garage this spring and turn the wheels I hear a crunch. I pop the hood to take a look as I have an idea what it was and I wasn't going to like it . I knew that I had a problem from the battery acid leaking down on the frame for 20 years before I acquired it but I didn't think it had gotten this bad.



But it was worse.

Very sorry to hear about your Dad. Sometimes a project like this is just the thing to keep our minds occupied and give us a new goal to get us past the pain of losing a loved one. You're right, the repair will be difficult, but it is certainly doable.

Thanks guys, my dad and I did a bunch of work on the Mirage to get it this far. hard to believe it is 4 years that he has been gone and its been almost that long since I've wanted to do much with the car.

Glad your back at it. Your dad would be proud. I too have Spirits pushing me to complete my SC project. This may sound weird but I enjoy reading about how H-Body owners have went about repairing the battery trays and related acid/rust decay. It seems everyone has their own idea of how to repair it.

What carpet kit did you use? also what color?

I have received a few samples and have yet to find on that matches the original in my Mirage. And yes, I am comparing it to a section of carpet that was under the seats protected from sun fading, etc.

The color is the Firethorn that goes with the Mirage. Its the same kit that Clyde used and other people have been using, with the same issues most report, of it being short on the front. I can't remember the name of the company, and the box is now gone
