rustorbust< I am sorry, I have not had the car on the lift. I build racing snowmobile engines for a living and I am really swamped right now, I hope to get back to work on the car and will get your dimensions here by the end of this month to the first week of november, I apologize for the delay.

Excellent crossmember design....

Postby 70styleVega » Sun Nov 04, 2007 9:46 pm

A lot of positive comments have already made.... I wanted to add mine.

SUBFRAME CONNECTORS, whether through the frame or or under the doors, can easily be tied to the new cross-member, creating an h-shaped frame under the car.

REAR FRAME RAILS, mounted above or below the rear floor, can be tied to this cross-member.

MINI-TUBBING an H-body requires that the Lower Control Arms be moved inboard. This cross-member could help mini-tub an H-body on a budget. This new cross-member would be a great place to attach relocated (and longer) LCAs. In another thread, someone showed how they moved the rear coil spring mounts inward 3" on each side on a Monza.
Combine the relocated coil springs and LCAs with this budget cross-member and a torque arm and you have a mini-tubbed H-body without breaking the bank.

I guess if i fabricated a solution that cool, it would be hard to stop welding:lol. Nice work.

megavega- you and one of my brothers should chew the fat sometime. he use to build race engines for Kawasaki jet skis at one of the biggest shops out here and California. the technology is probably very similar.

Don, I like your crossmember deal! Is that something you can take credit for coming up with or is that a old super stock idea or something? What company is the cage? It looks like the main hoop fits good, are you happy with it? Can we see some photos of the Silver/Gray car in you Avatar? Looks like you got it goin' on! Good Work! Lorne

poor car has not had any love given to her lately, I was just way too busy with snowmobile engines this year. I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel, I will jump back on the car. I need to post some more pics as I did get a few things more fabbed up before I quit on it.

As far as I know I am the original maker of the rear subframe, never seen it before. I have built a few of them with this set up but with variations such as 4 links and ladderbars. The silver car in the avatar has same basic frame set up. I have alot of pics of it but they would have to be scanned as they are all 35mm, before the days of digital cameras...LOL.
Cage is Comp engineering 10 pt, 1 5/8" tube., I have changed a few things with it. Fits good, I am happy with it. Its a "street car" not a race car so I have no crossbar and door bars, I didnt want to climb in and out of a jungle jim everytime.

Getting ready to do the floor/trans tunnel surgery as like Colin found out the t-56 wont fit in the tiny stock tunnel. So what I did was go to the junkyard and remove a tunnel from a 3rd gen camaro. I will trim off all the fat (uneeded edges and brackets, etc.) with the plasma cutter then lay it in the vega, trace around it and remove and transplant this in there to have room for the t56.

Will have pics of engine bolted to trans and the whole thing hangin over the car soon. Gotta do the surgery first to be able to fit it all in there.

Got the trans and all in it, heres some pics showing the large cut out needed and the vega tunnel top against a 3rd gen camaro tunnel. I kept the camaro gas pedal mount so it will merge into the vega floor/firewall.

I am about done with the drivetrain mock up and will need to finish weld the camro tunnel in. headers for the turbos will be next then it can all come apart to be painted and made nice.
