I like that tip about putting a chamfer on the thrust bearing. I never heard of that.

Heres an Update;
With the throw together rusty block 2nd 425 motor ( old rebuild 49K miles with the first motor's cleaner Heads) Clevite 77 bearings ( for insurance),a 1969 472 dual plane intake and a modified oil pump, it ran a 13.884 at 97.47 mph last Saturday. Currently in 11th place in Sportsman class.

Yes , I know of them and they have helped me out with questions. There is 4 major Cadillac Performance parts suppliers out there: MTS , Potter Automotive, Torque Inc. and Cad Company. Doug in AZ 8)

Good to see all that hard work is paying off.A powerglide tranny might work well with a torque motor like that if the rpms top out in high at the end of the quarter mile. They can be indestructable .The rear while probably be your weak link though,I blew mine up [6.5] with just a mild hard shifting 283 and auto tranny

I saw the Edelbrock 425 intake for sale for $285.00 at speed unlimited. That seemed like a really low price for CAD stuff. Too bad they don't make a single plane intake. The MTS stuff is expensive. A good intake/cam will wake that thing up!

283vega , So far ,so good with the original 7.5 that came in the car. ( minispool equipped) Only had to change one axle ( splines twisted slightly) in 28 years of hard abuse.

Todd, The early intakes with the center "hogged" out ( 4 to 2 hole) will flow just about equal to the Edelbrock. The only downfall is the weight. ( the iron 472 manifold weighs even more than the iron 425)

I gained 4 tenths with the manifold change alone. I could of added a cam but I was tight on time and money , just wanted to get it together and race it instead of my Silverado that took its place for 2 races.

When I first read that (It's late and I'm tired) I thought you were talking engine size. I was like "HUH?" Doh!

Hey Doug,

What I meant was, too bad Edelbrock does not sell a single plane at a price like you can get the Performer. No, I would not waste my money on a performer manifold either.

But a specialty single plane with a good cam would really wake that thing up! I've got a ton of CAD catalog stuff lying around from back when I was trying the 500 swap. For the right money, they sell some cool stuff.

Hey Doug,

I was digging through some old pictures from my 9 year build-up and found the CAD 500 pictures from when I was trying that out. It looked pretty cool in there, but I abandoned the idea due to header issues and some other stuff. These are from about 7 years ago before I painted the car in 2002.

I think its great that you got the 425 in there!

I've always liked the 500. The 425 is probably better suited for an H-body since it is about 100lbs lighter but nothing beats a 500 in a shortbed Chevy pick up. I mean as far as cheap, reliable and torquey go.

Great Pics Todd, brings back memories of in and out, in and out :lol: ..................................... You where on the right path. A low compression 472- 500 still might work with some dieting. Dont know about a turbo 350 holding up but I remember a friend in NY had a 10 sec fiberglass paneled 68 Cutlass - Olds 455 with a turbo 350 that held up so it may be a myth. Still, a 472- 500 weighs less than a SBC. I'm racing again this weekend ( Points Race #5) , I'll see if I can drop the ET a little lower. ( its going to real hot though! :bang: ) I'm the ONLY one that is racing a 425 currently in all of the Cadillac forums that I know of . The other guy in roundy round, blew his up last week and has stepped back from Cadillacs for now.

Good luck Doug, carry the Cadillac flag proudly. I really like the way you did your swap. I'd like to do an LSA swap into my Monza but thats a different type of Cadillac motor. How wide is the 425 vs. the 500?

A 472 - 500 is lighter than a small block? Really?
