Its actually an old check fixture for some automotive part that was taken out of production. A guy gave it to me, its a qualified surface so i figured it would be good for this kind of stuff. I am in the auto industry and i have since realized they probably scrap thousands of these plates per year :? , i would like to get my hands on a few more :)

Here are some pictures of the wish bone, rear clip, and the the anti-roll bar, all still under construction.

The rear is a ford 9.25" narrowed out of a lincoln, dug it out of a guys yard.

Oh, and not to worry, the car will get slicks

I decided to narrow the rear bumper, its not mounted so its hanging a little crooked but you get the idea:

hey ll8 just happened to find your project journal pics and what you are doing is unbelieveable.i can see you are very exact in what you do and it looks like your shop compares with an IBM clean room. do you do this kind of work for a living? i really like the way you did the complete rear suspension. looks like you are going to solid bush the rear ends of the 4 links and use heims on the front. ends.. is this a street type car? what are the vertical rods that have the heims that run up behind the rear, parallel to the coilovers. are the coilovers heim jointed. im always curious as to how and why people do their rear suspensions. im never too old to learn. keep up the good work art

Hey thanks Art, I just work out of my 2 car garage for fun. This is kind of my secondary car project budget build, I wanted to build a car for drag racing that could be driven by anybody without needing NHRA license etc, just jump in and go type of car with low maintenance. I run a dragster as well.

What you see with the rod ends on the 4-link bars are just a poly type bushing on front and rear, no hiem joints so they are definitely a pro street/hot rod type rod end. The rod ends and the street tires are left over from when it was going to be more of a pro street project. I figure i will leave these ends on for now and see how they work, easy to swap out later if needed. I will also wait to replace the tires until I make a few laps and see how the tire diameter is working out for me.

The vertical rods you see by the shocks connect the rear end to the anti roll (rear sway) bar.

This is now pretty much for racing only, not because it couldn't be a street car since it is so mild, but because I don't want to spend the time/effort/added weight to make it legal. I plan to make this a progressive project, start bone stock (NA). I think it will run in the 12 sec range, nice and slow for a bracket 3 foot brake car, and then add some forced induction on the engine in stock form and see where it goes from there. I think i want to keep it slow and above the magic 10 second range where there are more rule restrictions

Well, is has been said by some among us that if you don't have pictures it did not happen  So after some the scrutiny that maybe my project is fictitious, here we go...... this could take some time..... i refer to my car as the "junkyard dog" because most of the stuff looks like it should be there or has literally come from a junk yard....coupled with my marginal fab skills and limited resources I think you soon will agree.[/quote]

Hey LL8 , I'm trying to figure out who this guy is and why he didn't post his junk :? and why you took over his project journal , maybe he'll post his junk later or start a new journal !

heh-heh, I agree. I'm not seeing any junk here. If you want to look at some junk, just look at any car in my garage.

Nice work, LL8. I like the choice of motor - Inline sixes are cool.
But, I don't understand GM - the 4200 gets many accolades and GM stops production? :?

What CAD System did you use? If you are in the auto industry, I would guess CATIA - it sure looks like CATIA V5.

I'd like to have one of those 'check tables' they throw away, too. If you get your hands on another one ...

Mine to , and I want to find the junk yard and pick up some of those rusty old parts  , you know the junk yard is half the price of the parts stores ?

Some mighty fine craftsmanship there LL8 :th:

Thanks for the compliments guys, I can assure you this car is nothing special in todays world and most stuff came from sticks of steel and the junkyard.... and its a vega so it probably belongs in a junkyard according to society :D

I am wondering where all the haters are and why are they so quiet? I was expecting people to be telling me how ridiculous this build was :D Guess the H-body breed is more accepting than the ..... camaro, mustang, chevelle etc crowds

I can't remember all the reasons that they did away with the 4200, i think it was because they did away with the trailblazer etc. i think they still make the 5 cylinder and 4 cylinder version of this engine, they just add or subtract cylinders to the design for different applications. I like 5 cylinder, imagine the look on peoples face when you tell them you have a 5 cylinder engine

The CAD software is just SolidWorks, nothing fancy, thats what i have on my home PC so thats what i use.
I am trying to figure out how to get my hands on the check fixtures, they just sell them at scrap rate to have them melted down, even if i had to pay scrap rate it would be worth it for a machined flat pc of aluminum.

Here are some pics of fitting the wheel tubs, not sure if this is the right way to do it seems to fit decent.
