The first hack at the firewall

there were rats nests inside the frame rails that caught on fire when i was cutting with the plasma cutter

I decided that I would make a midplate for the car and a main hoop for the transmount, but then i realized I could just retrofit the trans-adapter and keep with the theme of junkyard dog instead of making something fancy..... OK i lied, i was too lazy to make a midplate so i just welded some tabs on the adapter and called it good.

What you see here is a very sophisticated piece made of cardboard, foam, and prints of the engine i sketched up. I used this when i was building my front clip to give me some reference to motor mounts, intake/exhaust ports etc.

Yes very redneck, but effective :) I looked all over at places that sell the plastic mock up small block chevy engines, and they did not have one of the 4200 LL8, not sure why :? so this was my alternative method

If I ever built something like that it would probably catch on fire from a welder spark and burn everything to the ground. :bang:

check out some pics of the bone stock bottom end in my LL8, they did not use a pan gasket from the factory, notice anything else interesting about the bottom end?

Intake manifold

I had to come up with a way to make some intake runners, since it was an oval hole, I decided to try making a die (for lack of a better word to use) to press into a round tube. I had to modify the die a couple times, but now it works out pretty good. the tube diameter was just a bit to mcuh so I made a slit on both sides of the runner, collapsed it a bit and stitched it back up. My method for pressing the die in was I made marks on the tube with a black sharpie permanent marker. I used a small propane torch to heat the aluminume tube intil the marks started to disappear, and then pressed it in.This was just a prototype, so hope the next runners will turn out better.

I have noticed that as I the die is used more it works better, maybe because the aluminum is building up on the surface

Started with a 4" diameter tube
I had no real good way to clamp the tube down and use a hole saw to cut the holes, so i decided to use a plasma cutter. Of course it was not as easy as tracing a circle onto the tube since it is not a flat surface, so in order to get the correct profile i sketched the part and and then flattened it in the software and made a print. then i printed it out and wrapped it around the tube, and traced it onto the tube. I was able to cut with the oval shape out with a plasma cutter, and cleaned it up with the die grinder, although a bit hillbilly fabrication techniques pretty effective worked out pretty good.....
