Please help me identify this car.

Postby SeniorSavage » Tue May 08, 2012 7:37 pm

please help me identify this vehicle.
there is a skyhawk emblem on the hatchback keycover but it also has a 'spyder' on the nose. it has an apparently stock 'astroroof'. i cannot find this particular front grille/bumper configuration in any pictures online. perhaps the letters that formerly said "monza" between the front headlights have been removed? also it has an aftermarket sporty steering wheeeeeel and no markings anywhere else.
the vin appears to say that it is '75 Skyhawk Hatchback because it starts with 4S07C52. C52 means ....?
thoughts?

It's a 75 interior for sure, looks like a nose from a 78 and later Monza. Obviously had some parts swapped during its' life. I didn't check the VIN but if what you said is correct then it's a 75 with some later parts swapped on to it. Since the VIN matches the 75 interior I would say it's a 75. What engine is in it? In 75 the Skyhawk only came with a V6, Monza's had a 4 cylinder or V8. It also makes sense that the rear still has the Skyhawk emblem while the front end which has obviously been changed has a Spyder. Skyhawks also came in a similar green color in 75.

What a mint color. The astroroof, is actually just an aftermarket sunroof. Looks nice though.

Appears to be a '75 skyhawk with a 1980 monza nose. It's actually a 78 to 80 monza nose, but the front skirts are '80 only and help make the car look really nice.

The C52 :

C = V6 engine
5 = 1975
2= St Therese assembly plant.

Just a word to the wise...with all that moisture around, better move it away from that grass and bushes or it will be too rusty to be anything within a short time..

Thanks guys, I knew you would know.

back in my dragracing days i had picked up a 76' Vega with the sole purpose of seeing if i could get the front wheels to lift off the ground on launch but got re-stationed before i ever got to turn a wrench on it and had to sell it. :bang: i still have the manuals here if anyones interested.
anyways a couple weeks ago my buddies in Alberta start telling me about this Spyder they seen for sale and send me a few pictures. PLUS theyre telling me that they have a line on an LT1 350 and 700R4 combo for 300 bucks as well. WELL! you already know what i'm thinking lol. based solely on the pix of the condition of the body and interior i send 500 bucks and they pick it up the car for me and move to safe-keeping on the farm (thanks marco, yes its been moved away from wet vegetation) and then send me the vin and a few more pics. i STILL have yet to actually lay eyes on this car. but then i check the vin of course and it says "Skyhawk" which never came with a v8 correct? uh-boy. anyone ever try to shoehorn a v8 into one of these without actually tubbing/gutting the engine compartment? is it an easy fit? doesnt look like it from the photo BUT my Alberta buddy thats here now with me just happens to have rebuilt his 3.8 turbo from his 83' Regal, is storing it in my garage and has already offered it to me.

wudja think?

what a mixup eh?

a 75' T-type SPYHAWK. :dance:

It will accept a V8 since this chassis is the same as a Monza which came with V8's from the factory.

ok, so no matter that the Skyhawks never came with anything other than the 3.8 you think the v8 will fit. your probly right. i've ordered the LT1 and 700r4 'just in case'.

jees, i cant hardly wait to pick this thing up. apparently the rear spoiler and possibly the hatchback also is off a Spyder (which happened to be the same color as the Skyhawk)? i cannot find any Skyhawk pictures with a rear spoiler (except the Firenzo of course) so i must assume that somewhere, sometime ago somebody took their 1980-ish Spyder front grill, air-dam, bumper, rear spoiler and hatchback and put it on a '75 Skyhawk? wtf?

btw, those fender wells dont look flared to you , do they?

I'm guessing but I think the original color is Canary Yellow (51). When you get to see the car look at the cowl tag and see what number is with the "U" & the "L".

The 79 & 80 Designer Accent Skyhawk had that rear spoiler just like the Spyder.

The V6 in it is an odd fire and the valve covers are a 1977 & later style. Looks nice and will even better with either engine!

I don't think the fenders have been flared. Brian

For the amount of money you have in it you should have a pretty good $$ to Grin ratio. :th:
You will have to come up with a torque arm mount if you use the 700R4 (unless it is from a Camaro) but is a problem that is easily solved any number of ways.

The V8 swap, will slide on in, with no issues if you find a V8 donor car. The harder work to me is replacing the V6 front springs to the V8 versions.

With the V6 swap you get to forego the suspension work... But the turbo down pipe will require a slight notching of the frame on the passenger side. Nothing major, but a cutter and some welding will be required. best of luck. will be a sharp looking ride..

There sure seemed to be some odd combos on these cars. It's almost like GM was just grabbing whatever they had left to build a car. :lol: To be honest, after I bought my Monza in 75 I didn't pay that much attention to the later H body models that came out at the time. Sure were a lot of variations.

Clyde you don't think that was factory do you? I could be misinterpreting your reply..

Thats a swapped on Buick front clip all day long. Buick never made a coupe, and Lordstown wasn't THAT loose or clumsy.
