That could be the difference maybe - hide-away wipers. I'd love to see a pic of the module!

Bad luck today,

i want to change my steering column assembly (1980 Monza) for a tilt steering column from my old 1979 Starfire .
As you can see, the shaft diameter is different .

Image

Harmonica connector and wiring are the same .
So, i lost 2 hour .

Picture of normal steering column and tilt steering column .

Image

After removing my RPM meter i found a white jumper and a small metal thing .

Image

I check my old meter from my Starfire and indeed, the two pieces are from the RPM meter .
What is it ? And why there are 2 possibility to place the jumper ?
Can somebody help me pls ?

Grtz

"harmonica connector" never heard that before but it's a good name.

The white nylon piece is a printed circuit board standoff and the metal speed nut for it maybe. They all appear to be in that gauge though. Maybe fell out of another gauge.

I think somebody on a duch US car website use the name harmonica connector .
The pin and the small metal speed nut going in one of the 2 holes on the back of the meter (you can see the 2 small holes on the pic) .
I think it is for 6 or for 8 cylinder ??? but i'm not sure .

Those are to change the tach from 4 to 6 to 8cyl. if they are out it will read a different speed. I am sorry I don't remember which way is which but Tim McCabe does and he should be able to help you out some way I am sure. You have obviously had one (or more) fall out. Had a look at my v6 tach it it has no jumper. It is a pcb standoff but in this case it's being used to hold the metal washer jumper to short out different resistors in the ic chip next over to it. I would suggest that one way is 4cyl and the other 8 cyl. Just try it both ways and see what makes more sense. :)

I take a picture from the other RPM meter .
The metal washer jumper is right .

Image

I have a V6 3.8Lt .
As a final test, i reassembly my instrument panel, connect the RPM meter with the metal washer jumper right .
And i check the RPM with a tester .
Harry, i send a PM to Tim .

Hi Peter,

The jumper is used to set up the tach for either 4, 6 or 8 cylinder.
No jumper is 4 cylinder and if I remember correctly the bottom hole is V8 and the top one is V6.
The jumper tends to corrode and cause erratic readings, so I recommend to solder a jumper wire across for the setting you want.
Also make sure the 3 nuts holding the gauge to the circuit board are tight and making good connection.

Cheers,
Tim

Looks like you remember correctly! My jumper must have fallen out too. Soldering a jumper in is the way to go as Tim suggested.

A different approach to the problem! What will you use to cover the framework?

That rear bumper trim looks awesome.
