Project - "FT2BTYD" 1977 Astre

Postby ponchonuty » Wed Feb 18, 2015 4:09 am

Ok all thought I'd start an Official build thread on the Astre and let you all in on my plans for the old girl. I just got this car a few weeks ago and have been looking for another for awhile now and it seems like I can't get my hands on a wagon so I will settle for this one lol
As you all I know I am trying to track do the history of this car to see if its "rare" rare then most. I will be sending in for the PHS packet and GM Canada packet I am still hunting for the build sheet. I haven't made mush progress with that yet lol. But I plan to build me one heck of a street/strip terror with full Pontiac power!! No chevy motors in this one!
Here is kinda a run down on what is instore for this car (unless someone has a wagon for trade)....
Mini tubs with 275DR on 15x10 wheels
Narrow Disc brake 8.8" rear end
S10 front conversion
12+ Roll Cage without wheel wells
Custom built Fiberglass Hood
Fiberglass Bumpers narrowed and tucked for cleaner look
Possible Fiberglass Rear Hatch
Lexan Back and Side Windows
Custom made Adjustable Torque Bar and lower Control Arms
Will retain the Full Interior and Heater will ditch the AC
Will get a NASTY 461 Poncho Stroker Motor
That's pretty much what "FT2BTYD" is going to be...one pissed off Astre lol

Here's the before pics...

I found me a Poncho 400 and TH400 trans...Time to get the little duke out of the car and start mock up!! Getting pretty excited I must say! I have plenty to do before i start mocking up the 400...I have to get ride of all the A/C stuff and factory mounts. I am going to use a front motor plate this should help me in getting headers built and to fit as tight as possible! I will be updating with plenty of pics once the fun starts!!

After a few deals fallings threw I finally scored a 73 Pontiac 400 complete running motor with Edelbrock Intake and carb for $500 and the guy even dilivered it for me for free he was a couple hours away too. So now the fun is about to start!!

:th:

That will be one heck of a torque monster......
My mild '79 400 (RA3 cam, all else stock '79 W72) would pull the heavy '79 T/A from a dead stop in 4th gear without any problem...... but shifting gears was super fun.

Keep up the good work.

I like the idea of a Pontiac motor in a Astre.....something besides a SBC.

Yep, I agree, full Poncho power in a Pontiac! Should be fun. Good luck with the build.

Well looks like I am going to go a different route... The Astre is now up for sale. I just don't fit in them like I used to being over 6 foot tall and all. So I am hoping to find it a good home.
