Ok, time for a small update. I was going to use the "dirty" alternator, so I took it to work to check it and clean it up. I checked it, and it was working perfect. but the amperage was not very high. I checked what the alternator was rated for, and it was only a 37 amp alternator. Too small for what I will be running. I calculated I would need about 45 to 50 amps, so I checked through my garage, until I found one rated at 61. The only problem with that one, it was locked up. I took it to work, and took it apart, checked the windings, diode trio, etc. Good news, only needs brushes, and bearings. I cleaned everything up, coated the housings, fan, and pulley, put the new bearings in, and assembled it. Checked it on the test stand, and it works perfect. When I got home, I stuck it on the engine. Nothing fancy, just keeping myself busy. Brad

When do you need 40 - 50 amps? You may want to reconsider that 10SI alternator, they don't produce much until they are spinning good.

Good thread here: viewtopic.php?t=19039

2 electric fans, 1 electric water pump, ignition system(the hei is only for initial fireup, initial tuning, and breakin), electric fuel pump, and lights, for night cruising. No radio, wouldn't be able to hear it if I wanted to.

Hey Chris, thanks for the info on that alternator, if this one doesn't work out, I'll have to do something. This is just one I had, and it only cost about $25.00 to rebuild, plus it gave me something to do over my lunches. Brad

Been working on the car this week. Just a whole lot of little things, and thought I would share the progress in an update. I have been mocking up the carb, nitrous, etc, and initially had the fuel pressure regulator mounted on top of the bracket I bought, and soon realized that the air cleaner wouldn't go on. I thought for a while, and then it dawned on me to mount it under the bracket. Now the air cleaner fits again. Had to buy a whole bunch of fittings, now I'm ready to install the fuel hoses. I took a side shot with the air filter on, to see how much clearance I'm going to need as far as the hood goes. A bunch! I finally found a belt that fits on the alternator. I mounted the electric fans on the radiator, I plan on replacing the radiator with an aluminum one later, and I managed to install some tranny cooler lines. I will replace them with some that fit better later, but I want to hear the engine run sooooooo bad, that I can't stand to wait anymore. I still have the driveshaft to install, stab the distributor in time, buy and install radiator hoses, and fill the fluids. I'm hoping this next weekend I might be able to fire it off, if so, I will try to post a vid. Lots of pics. Brad

Yeah Harry, I've got the "itch" real bad! With all the riced-out cars running around locally, I think I can still pull off the "sleeper" effect, until I start it anyways. If you stacked all of the fake hood scoops in my county alone, Armstrong wouldn't have needed a single ounce of rocket fuel to make it to the moon. Figured it was time for an update. I didn't have much time to work on the car, but I did manage to make the subframe connectors. I made them long so I might try to go all the way to the front suspension, don't know yet. I found the dimensions on here somewhere. Maybe this weekend, I'll get to fire off the engine. Brad

Here's a link to the print I used to make mine. I made the 2x2 36 inches to go farther forward to the front suspension. Brad

IT'S ALIVE! Bwahahaha! 8) :th: I finally got it fired up. It only took like forever. I had a few mishaps along the way. First time it lit up for about 5 seconds, and I soon realized I forgot to install the oil pressure gauge. Woops. That made a heck of a mess. So I installed the test gauge, and tried again. The battery I was using was an O'reillys reject from my Trailblazer, needless to say, it didn't hold up. I went to Autozone today and bought a new battery, the biggest one I could get to fit the factory tray, still not very big, only 550 cca. If someone knows of one that fits, but is more cca, please let me know. Next problem, the rubber seal on the oil filter blew out, and sprayed another 4 quarts of oil all over my floor. I removed the oil filter, and to my surprise, the oil filter adapter was broke in 2. I looked around the garage, and found another one, cleaned it up, and installed it, with a new filter, and filled the oil again. After trying to start the engine for about 20 minutes, playing with the timing, and such, she lit up. She shook all the dust off of the ceiling.(open headers) Now that I am smiling, ear to ear, I have found new motivation, to get the car done. I was down in the dumps last month, after my mom passed, but I am feeling better now. Brad
