Project Spyder Spoiler...

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Fri Mar 25, 2016 11:26 pm

For my efforts in Helping Phoenix Graphix develop their line of replacement decals for the Monza Spyder Z02 graphics option (77 to 79...1980 Z29 Spyder decal sets also available), they included a replacement rear spyder decal!

This is marvelous, because I've had a wave free replacement spoiler hanging around, the only issue I had with it was no rear spyder decal. Well, Now It can have one , as long as I can get it installed correctly. any decal installation advice / feedback / heads up welcome..

Here's the original spoiler and it's all to obvious warped edge. To bad since it's finish is smooth and original and its decal is still like new.

Here's the replacement. Well matching color, but has some orange peel that needs some color sanding and polishing which were going to attempt before the decal install.

Here's exactly how I want it to look...

And finally the decals.. not sure how much to cut around the edges.

I'm getting ready to mount the decal. Here's some pic's. I applied some touch up paint. Wet sanded with 1200 then 2000 (looks 100% better) Then a final pass with some 0000 steel wool. Lastly some Meguires compound. That brought the shine back. Just needs a final wax once the decal is applied. The color is a little brighter and more orangey that the spoiler it's replacing.

The wetsanding revealed marks on the spoiler showing it used to have a monza spyder decal on it at one time. This new one is just a slight shade off on the gold, otherswise it's a nice duplicate of the original.

I'm going to use the wet method to install the decal. I just got to get some isopropyl alcohol to clean the surface.

Well, there ended up being a break in the weather and work....so i got down to business on getting the decal on. I love youtube, for the confidence you can build by watching peoples 'how-to' video's.

That got me through this without a hitch. I used the depth finder on my calipers to copy the placement of the decal, from the old spoiler. Got it taped into place. Wet the area with lightly soaped water. Peeled the backing away carefully and slowly rolled the decal on from the to of the S downward, trying to keep the decal sticking on progressively to conform with the curve in the spoiler. Once stuck, I encountered some tiny bubbles here and there, but I worked them out with the squeegee. After-all.. a perfect install.

Here's the spoiler installed... the color is super close but not exact, but the lack of wavyness makes up for it. One slight wave on the right side, but It's more like what you might expect. My original spoiler was "shrunk to fit".. meaning this new one, is about 1/4 inch longer than the old one. That messes with the alignment of the left side corner piece. But most monza's I've seen have issues in this area.

Here's the pic's...

You know I was. Thats why I used the water and soap method... gives you some bubble hassles...they were a bit stubborn too, but gives you a small window of opportunity to correct any mistakes.

I know I'm late to the party here, but I'm encouraged to see how well this went. I've spoken to Phoenix Graphix about their color being 'wrong' on the side door decals and otherwise 'close' on the rear spoiler. (That yellow mustard color is what is supposed to be on the doors and spoiler both, not the gold that is on the hood decal). I was interested to see how there is a very slight difference in color between their new decal and your old decal but still glad that it's very close. Besides, it could be years of fading that cause the slight coloration difference. Great work, Marco!
