1974 Pontiac Astre V8 Project

Postby sbastre » Mon Apr 24, 2017 8:21 pm

Hi Guys! I am new to the site and glad to be here! I have purchased a 1974 Pontiac Astre hatchback. Still has the original 4 banger and 4 speed transmission. I have a lead on a 1977 Monza 350 4 speed. Am I able to swap the v8 and 4 speed directly? I was told the Monza will have everything I need to complete the vega. Please Give me advice haha. Thanks. Bernie.

Welcome and nice looking car! The only problem I can think of is a 77 Monza will have a torque arm rear suspension, and your 74 will have 4-link. You might need to do some fabrication for the trans mounting, but everything else should be a bolt in. You may want to check to see if the Monza was a factory V8 car, because the engine should be a 305 in 77. I'm sure others will chime in and help you as well.

Should be pretty much a bolt in but I would expect some slight mods. You would be better off also swapping the rearend since it has a 7.5" vs the 6.5" in the Astre. You may have to fabricate a mount for the panhard bar but this would eliminate tissue with the torque arm mount and you could also use the Monza driveshaft.
