Hi,
Since I am new here I thought I would
introduce myself. I am the owner of a a '76 Vega hatchback.
Most recently it was a '79 305 w/ TH250 trans. I t was
cheap and it was fun for awhile but I crave more power
and better brakes. With a little cam and free flowing
exhaust the 305 would run a lot better than the brakes
would allow. For this winter I want the following
modifications:
I have purchased or traded for: a complete 350 4
bolt core - a TH350 transmission core with universal
bolt pattern (I always wanted one, but realy didn't
need it) spindles, calipers, etc. from a '80 Malibu.
and a ford 8" rear axle. I am in the process of
adapting the malibu ball joints to Monza a-frames. Talked
to the machinist today and I hope he is going to
whip up a pair of sleeves that will match the Malibu
ball joint o.d. These I will have welded into the
Monza a-frame. Any suggestions as to how to cut a
perfect centered hole in the a-frame so that the new
sleeve is in the proper location?

Welcome to da club..
for your balljoonts
adaptor question
the best way to center the new sleeve
is to weld the new sleeve on the a-arm (have the
hole a bit undersized)
the using the original ball
joint hole for reference hone the larger sleeve on a
mill
that how i did mines

Thanks Denis for the welcome. Another machinist
type question. How does one go about redrilling axle
flanges and brake drums for a different wheel bolt
pattern? I have a ford 8" from a mavrick that is very
close to the correct width. I want to have Chevy 5x4
3/4" bolt pattern front and rear. Also I will
eliminate the Vega torque arm when I bolt in the new rear
axle. What do you recommend I do to keep the housing
from twisting? I have used 80 Monza axle housing
brackets for the rear trailing arms and panhard bar.

for your reartires question i`m not sure (i`m
running a monza)245/60/15 or 255/60/15 SHOULD fit with a
15/8 wheel with 3.5`` of backspace
to remove he
torque arm on your vega you`ll have to weld new mounts
for your upper arm in the body of the car
the
easiest way(in my tought0 is to reuse the torque arm for
this you`ll have to fabricate a mount that will bolt
the the ford housing(to have tips on this look at
some diffrentiel for a 3rd or 4 th generation
camaro
