I am thinking about changing my carb and transmission to fuel injection and a 4 spd atutomatic.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

If I was going to do this swap I think the easy
way to go about it would be to take the complete
drivetrain out of a 3rd Gen. F Body along with the computer
and complete wireing harness, this will take a lot of
guess work out of the swap.
Another thing you'll
have to pay attention to is fuel delivery, ie fuel
pump, evap system and all the plumbing that leads
directly to the fuel tank.
I'm currently running the
TH2004r in my '80 Skyhawk, this is the best mod I've done
to date, any paticular reason why you chose the
2004r over the 700r4? Also there are a couple of guys
on the GMHbody board that have done this swap in
their Vegas, did a nice job to, I believe they're both
running the BW T5 Trans. Ian

I understand that the 350 automatic and the 200r4
have the same length.
Did you run into any
problems?
I may keep the present 231 v6 for the rebuild I am
not sure yet/
The engine does need a rebuid but it
has dobi headers, and a complete eldebrock kit
-4barrel carb, intake manifold, aluminum air cleaner and
finned valve covers also an accel coil.

That's right, the 200r4 is the same overall
length, no need to shorten the driveshaft.
Your
factory trans cooling lines will work, you might have to
bend them a little right at the the trans case
fittings. Use the filler tube and dip stick, and most
important of all, the TV cable that comes with the 200
4r.
When it comes to hooking up your shifter cable, I
modified the TH350 bracket that bolts to the trans pan....
it was a real pain trying to get the right geometry,
I would'nt do it again it's not worth the headache,
just go to the dealer and buy the correct bracket for
a mid eightys olds cutlass or Regal GN that came
with the 2004r, I'm assuming they are still available,
I will find out as we just completed a TH350 to a
2004r conversion in a '84 olds cutlass at the shop
where I work.
As for the trans crossmember, you'll
need to move it rearward I think about 4-6" I did this
by bolting in two lengths of 1 1/2" angle iron to
the stock crossmember location and then bolted the
crossmember to the angle iron so it lined up with the trans
mounting pad (the TH350 rubber mount will work) when you
do this you won't be able to use the factory pellet
style catalitic converter.
The trickiest part of
this conversion was makeing a brackett for the torque
arm, I used a piece of 1 1/4" flatbar bent it at a
rightangle and sandwhiched it between the trans mounting pad
and the rubber mount. You'll have to bend the flatbar
in order to line it up with the rubber bushing on
the torque arm. This is only one way of hooking up
the torque arm and it's worked well for the last
eight years however I'm going to modify it again which
involves shortening the torque arm about 2" and making a
brackett similar to what I described but will allow you to
play with pinion angles.
Is you car a Monza Mirage?
hope this helps, Ian

Thanks for the information. I know that it will
be very valuable when I begin this changeover.
I
did own a monza mirage until christmas. I gave it to
my grandson. It had 87,000 miles on the body. It had
less than 5000 miles on most of the mechanicals
including the 4 core (US radiator) radiator, 350 v8-
slghtly modified with cam, carb, intake and a 350
automatic with a hurst shifter and B&M shift kit, dual dobi
exhausts and with 4 outlets at the rear.
I still own my
1980 skyhawk modified with, dobi headers and dual
exhausts. In addition,it has the eldebrock kit which
consists of cmashaft and lifters, 4 barrel carburetor,
aluminum intake manifold and finned aluminum air cleaner
and valve covers. It also has an auburn
positraction.
I also have my 1979 monza hatchback, that has the
same modifications as my old mirage except it has a 4
bolt 400 engine and 2 turbo mufflers with dual exhaust
tips. It also has a complete mirage kit installed.

Wow, that Mirage must have been a beauty, I'll
say one thing you must have a big heart, how long and
how hard did your grandson twist your arm to swing
that deal lol!
Sounds like you've got some nice
toys to play with, I'd luv to own a nice mirage but my
skyhawk is in such good shape I could'nt give it
up.
Any tips on how you installed the mirage kit? Ian

Ian,
What would you like to know about the
installation of the mirage kit?
I located the kit several
years ago and pop riveted them on as well as using some
"hard as nails" caulking. I did not have good
conditioned attaching strips so I went to the local hardware
store and bought strips of paneling attachments in 6
foot lengths. They fit ok and you have to look close
to see that they are not original.

It was an
easy decision to give my grandson the mirage because
he had helped me remove the fender extensions and
spoilers from the mirage so we could sand the car down to
bare metal bafore we primed it. I forgot to mention
that I had it painted bright white seven coats of
acrylic enamel. He had also helped me with a few other
things, so I thought that since he needed a car to go to
work -why not the mirage, especially since it was
mechanically new front to back.
