5 speed speedometer cable

Took the Vega into Chev today to change trans
oil. Came back with a very slight leak around the
backup light screw in switch. Cleaned that up, don't
know if it is leaking or not. Looked at the speedo
cable where it enters the transmission. It seems to be
loose. There is a bolt to the left that seems to hold
the cable in the trans. There is a small amount of
noise in the speedo cable at the dash in the cabin and
a small amount of oil where the cable goes into the
trans. Q. How does the cable come loose from the trans,
and what does one lube it with there. I will also
disconnect it at the dash, and was wondering what the proper
lube is here. Speedometer seems to work fine except
for the noise.

Also, changed the oil in the
rear end and they forgot to put a few bolts back in.
Great attention to detail there. However, they did find
that the sway bar bolts were loose. Cured that banging
noise.

George, if you follow the cable down to the
tranny, you will find where it screws into the rear
sectoin of the tranny. As far as lube, I put cable eaze
on the clutch cable. It is a graphite lube you can
get at most auto parts stores. Never have used it on
a speedo cable though. Good luck, let me know what
you find out. - Chris.
