For those looking for a replacement tire with
dimensions and revs/miles as close to OEM as possible the
metric size 195/70R-13 is the closest to the OEM BR70-13
tire, but they have all but disappeared.

In
reviewing the tire literature I picked up at the SEMA show
last month I note that General offers this size in the
XP 2000 II line with a "T" speed rating (118 MPH).
Unfortunately it is only available in a raised white letter
version, and, hopefully, you will paint the white letters
over with black tire paint and mount them "backwards"
to show the black sidewalls, true to the OEM
configuration.

The Yokohama AVS Intmediate remains the last true
summer high performance tire in a 205/60R-13 size and
they are V-rated to boot, but the AVS Intermediate is
scheduled to be phased out beginning next spring, and I
doubt if the new Yokohama replacement will be offered
in this size.

Toyo and Kumho still offer a
DOT legal racing tire in a 205/60R-13, but it's not
clear how long they will be around.

The only
sure thing is that good rubber, which is a key to any
car's ultimate handlling is going to get tougher to
find as time goes on, and at some point the only
choice we'll have is low or non-speed rated all season
tires, which won't be much more than wheel
protectors.

What is the best way to keep tires from dry rotting on cars that are not driven that often?
Any suggestions

How does one keep tires from "dry
rotting"?

I can offer these suggestions. Others perhaps can
provide more.

1. Keep ozone away from the tires.
This primarily means do not store them in closed areas
where electric motors operate.

2. Do not expose
them to sunlight, or other sources of ultraviolet
light. The UV is death on the rubber in the
tires.

3. Keep them cool. Heat is bad for tires.

4.
Dismount them from the car and reduce the air pressure.
This allows the tire to contract, closing up the
microscopic pores that inflation and the stretching of the
rubber opens. This will prevent ozone and oxygen from
migrating below the surface of the tire to cause
damage.

5. Finally, if possible, store them in an airtight
container that has been filled with an inert gas. Nitrogen
is commonly available, as is helium. This will
displace all of the oxygen surrounding the tires,
preventing any oxidation reactions. You may even want to
partially inflate them with an inert gas as
well.

"Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer
choice."

Tires

My oldest set of tires is a set of 7.00-15
Goodyear Blue Streak Sports Car Specials - manufactured no
later than 1964. They were in various warehouses until
1979 and have been in my garage tire rack since then,
which rarely gets much over 75 degrees. They have never
been mounted, but will end up on the knockoffs for my
'63 Corvette. They still look as new, but the
stickers are starting to turn brown and
shrivel.

Ozone and UV are a tires worst enemy, and the cooler
the environment you store them the better. Sealed
nitrogen bags is a bit extreme - certainly helpful, but
not easy to accomplish.

Since my tire rack is
full of Corvette tires and the second set of mounted
wheels and tires for the CV, MR2 and 190E 2.6 I keep my
stash of unmounted CV and MR2 tires in the closet of
the downstairs spare bedroom.

Art. Spare tires and part's are tucked away in
the garage. I have managed to secure a small spot in
the house for strip kits and gasket sets as well as
other things needing a dry and cool storage area.
Beyond this I could always kick the dog out of her house
and sleep there I guess?

Guys, I just got my four new 205/60HR-13 Sumitomo HTR200 tires today
from the internet company, The Tire Rack. These are the first tires
I have bought for my Cosworth in over fifteen years! I highly
recommend The Tire Rack. I ordered them on Sunday, they shipped on
Monday and I got them on Wednesday. They only cost $40 each plus a
total of $31.52 shipping for 2 day FedEx. Though I would have
prefered a Goodyear tire, that company no longer makes a high
performance tire in the Cosworth's size. And, while I would have
rather bought the much stickier Kumho VictoRacer, those tires would
have bumped me into the CVOA modified class, all by themselves. I
had the gall to take the Sumitomos to my local Goodyear dealer and
they charged me $141 to dismount my old tires, replace the valve
stems, mount the new tires, spin balance, and remount the wheels to
the car. I did the removal and replacement of the lug nuts with a
torque wrench, not trusting anyone with an air wrench and MY lug
nuts. The new tire/wheel combination lowered my car about one inch
all around, now that should improve handling, also. While at the
Goodyear store, they looked up my car history and told me that I had
put only 800 miles on my Cosworth in 2-1/2 years! Now, that was
interesting. I am going to HAVE to get out more often!
-Clark

P.S.: I will be autocrossing my Cosworth in Austin, Texas as part of
the CVOA Region XII meet this next weekend. I'll let you all know
how I did, if it was good. If it was bad, well, you may never hear
from me again. :')-CAK

Yes, I do now believe that I was raped at the Goodyear store. $141
to dismount my old tires, mount the new ones and spin balance them.
That was their way of saying do not bring other peoples' tires to us,
again!

Clark it may not have been that bad if they used a balancer that
does road force and they aligned the tire to the rim to give the
smoothest ride in which case you put it on the machine it test the
tire then measures rim runout then they breakdown and turn the tire
to the best location reseat the bead then recheck road force and if
they used tape weights behind the spokes and inside lip as to have
no weight on outer edge that would be inline with pricing we get $30
to $35 for that. We have 19 lbs road force max for passenger tires
the local cadie dealer send us cars as they don't have such a
machine and GM requires 8 to 10 lbs r f its funny thought you would
think michlins and goodyears would balance up the best but in
reality they are the worst sometime they don't even make the 19lbs

Wow, I really appreciate my tire guy even more now. He only charges
$10 each to remove, mount, and balance.
In answer to the other question, no, Goodyear no longer makes a
195/70/13 They made them as recent as 6 or 7 years ago. The red
Cosworth I have had that size Goodyear tires on it when I bought it.
I took them off and saved them for a restoration. Good luck, Chris
