For those looking for a replacement tire with
dimensions and revs/miles as close to OEM as possible the
metric size 195/70R-13 is the closest to the OEM BR70-13
tire, but they have all but disappeared.
In
reviewing the tire literature I picked up at the SEMA show
last month I note that General offers this size in the
XP 2000 II line with a "T" speed rating (118 MPH).
Unfortunately it is only available in a raised white letter
version, and, hopefully, you will paint the white letters
over with black tire paint and mount them "backwards"
to show the black sidewalls, true to the OEM
configuration.
The Yokohama AVS Intmediate remains the last true
summer high performance tire in a 205/60R-13 size and
they are V-rated to boot, but the AVS Intermediate is
scheduled to be phased out beginning next spring, and I
doubt if the new Yokohama replacement will be offered
in this size.
Toyo and Kumho still offer a
DOT legal racing tire in a 205/60R-13, but it's not
clear how long they will be around.
The only
sure thing is that good rubber, which is a key to any
car's ultimate handlling is going to get tougher to
find as time goes on, and at some point the only
choice we'll have is low or non-speed rated all season
tires, which won't be much more than wheel
protectors.
