Clark,

There is a place in Addison that will do the exhaust on your CV. I
had my built there a year ago and the guy does a great job. He ran
2.5 inch from the header and over the rear axle and out the driver
side. If you are down for DDII, please look at my exhaust and see if
you like it. This guy does alot of custom work.

Art, sorry to disagree, but your system is not mendrel bend, maybe
that's what they told you, but it isn't.

I have only one piece that is mendrel bend on my exhaust and you can
see it in the photo section under #0539.

The only mendrel is the loop over the axle, but both ends of that
loop are bent with a regular pipe bender and you can see the
difference, when you use a pipe bender, it make a dent in the inside
of the curve.

If you want I can email you picture of a complete mandrel bend
exhaust, I have one on my other car.

Hopefully I'm not rocking your boat here, it's not my intention, but
I never found a shop that Custom make an exhaust all mendrel bend
without using "U" bend pieces cut and welded together, like the one
and only piece I have on my car.

The only way to get a full mandrel bend exhaust is to buy a mass
produce custom system made specifically for that car.

Corsa, B&B Tri-Flo, Flowmaster and the like makes complete mandrel
bent exhaust and are really nice, I've own one from Flowmaster on my
69 Z/28 and now have one all stainless from Corsa on my ZR1 but they
are all mass produce and available as an of the shelf item.

One guy here used a 3" system from a newer Camaro and used the
bends, if I remember right it was the owner of that cool
supercharged CV.

Al you are correct as far as dents on the inside of the bends on non
mandrel bends but my system doe not have those dents it is smooth
the orignal replacement system that was on the car has the dents you
speek of and so does the curves and u's you can buy at the corner
autoparts store but not this system.

Al I looked at your system and the last picture of the u with the
pipe in front with the double dip in it must be what you are talking
about. I don't have that the only thing that I do not like on my
system is the bend going into the muffler the outside of the bend is
a bit flattened but there are no dents like what you have. If they
did not mandrel bend them they did a very good job in my opinion.
Besides for $200. complete installed I really can't complain

Soory Art, when looking at picture 9 of 11 under #1105, the closest
bend on the picture looked like it had the inside dent.

Then photo 6 of 11, looks like the pipe is concave on the outside of
the bend coming from over the axle and going into the muffler.

Must be the light from the angle of the picture, it's pretty hard to
show on a few pictures.

Where did you get it done? I know here in Canada, I haven't found
any shop that do them, only one but he uses those u's, he actually
sells them, and I was planning to do my exhaust myself using
them "U"'s, but I just can't find any spare time between my job and
my house renovation.

You are right about the concave thats the part I don't like but over
all I am pleased with the system. I wish they did not tack weld the
pipes to the muffler though I would prefer the tail pipe to have
been rotated up a bit more so that the twin outlets would be more
level. You maybe right about how they bent it up but I though that
non mandrel had the series of bumps on the inside of the bends
something like a washboard and this does not. I want to say it was
cole muffler. I will check the bill and let you know for sure.

Exhaust

I will be replacing my exhaust system this spring and wanted some
feedback on replacing the Cat. I will be replacing from the header
back to the tailpipe. My question is, since I am emission exempt,
should I even bother replacing the cat? Will it hurt performance
without the added back pressure. Can I run the exhaust with just a
muffler (probably Flowmaster), and not worry about back firing. I had
a '76 Capri with a 2.8 V6 that I removed the cat's on, and I lost a
ton of low end power and every time I shifted, it backfired. Will the
cosworth also have this problem, or will it help the power with less
restriction?
Thanks,
Mike #2874

For ever psi of exhaust backpressure you loose one psi of BMEP,
however, significant reductions of backpressure can upset fuel
metering and make a car run poorly, which is probably the source of
the myth "engines need backpressure". On the CV you can tweak the MAP
sensor adjustment to bias the mixture across the operating range if
poor operation from less backpressure occurs.

The CV suffers immensely from exhaust backpressure. For example, with
the OEM exhaust less converter and PAIR my engine made 109 RWHP at
6000. With my off road open exhaust and no fan it made 151 HP ad 6500
and was still climbing. (The MAP sensor was 1/4 turn rich) The fan
absorbs about 5 HP at 6500.

I recommend that you use a Walker Dynomax Ultraflow muffler. From the
data I have seen these seem to have the best combination of sound
attenuation and low backpressure, but it still might be loud without a
converter. If you decide to run a converter I would recommend a
modern monolithic converter as the OEM converter is much more
restrictive.

Use 2.5" pipe and mandrel bends are best, but expensive. A low
restriction exhaust system is the best way to gain useable power. The
next best way is probably reindexing the cams as has been discussed
here.

Duke, When you put on your open track exhaust, how do you sucure the
rear part of the exhaust tubing? When I change my Cat, the rear
part of the system seems to be easily tipped like a see saw.

Just above the pipe flare there is a bracket (mine is a '76) that I
loop a piece of cut up coat hanger through to secure the pipe. When I
reconfigure to drive home I just cut off the wire and throw it away.

My off road pipe attaches to the end of the crossover pipe and goes
back a bit, then loops under the rocker panel and up and to the rear.
