Heater core

Does all replacement heater core have straight
outlet pipe?, I like the original better with the 90deg
elbow, it was a pain to remove, but the hose fits like
it should.

Al, 75 #0359

Just bought it
last week end.

Al, you bought a heater core for a Vega without air conditioning. You may be able to get a radiator shop to take off the 90 degree elbow and braze it on to the new core.

Good Luck

Heater core

Al, there is one other option depending on your
abilities. At first it might seem like more work, but
actually it's a trade off for working with that 90 degree
connection on the core. 1/2 inch wrought copper fittings
measure 5/8 on the inside diameter. A 1/2 inch 90 degree
copper elbow and a one inch long 1/2 inch piece of
copper pipe will make the 90 degree turn that you need
on a cosworth for the core supply line. Of course if
originality is an issue, this is not an option. This fix will
also not be readily noticeable.

First, braze
(at the low temp it's actually called soldering) the
1 inch long pipe nipple into the 90 degree copper
fitting. It's also a good idea to melt a ring of solder
around the pipe nipple about 1/4 of an inch from the end
to act as the barb does, to help retain the
hose.

Then, cut the barb off the end of the heater
core. Shove some tightly wound paper towel into the
core nipple first to keep the filings out. Using some
sort of heat shield to protect the enviroment, braze
the copper ell assembly onto the core nipple making
sure that you have it rolled correctly. If you use
some really cheap solder, you will not have to get the
surfaces as hot. Any solder should hold up to the pressure
and heat.

It might seem like a lot of work,
but for someone who has brazed hot water heater
fittings it pretty much the same. If you ever have to
remove the core, simply heat the joint up and remove the
ell assembly. I'd prefer this to having to deal with
fighting the installation with the 90 connection. I hate
to have force things when assembling, like you have
to do with the cosworth core.

Just providing
an option..Mike

Heater core

Thanks for your help, I agree it was a pain to
remove the original with the 90 deg.
The new one was
much easier to install, I found enough room beside the
engine to make a loop in the hose without any kinks and
send it where it should, that took care of the elbow,
I was curious as to know if they made a core like
the original.

Now the other problem was with
the top core hose, I tried a few different way to
route it, the original hoses were not hooked to the
core when I bought the core, and it took me 3 attempts
to get it in without a kink, and I'm sure it is not
where it should be, but without knowing where it's
suppose to be, that's all I could do for now, I'll have
to fix it later.

Is there a service manual
for these cars?

Since they apparently where
not sold here in Canada, my dealer is having a hard
time to find any info on it, even the timing belt I
still haven't heard back from him.

Tim, That's a good idea, but BTW my car never had
air, I could have got the elbow put on the new core,
but I will keep the old one in case I decide to have
the car all original one day, then I'll do the swap,
but for now I'm not too concern about originality, so
I will leave it like that, it was much
easier.

Al CV0359 30,000 miles all original except tires,
heater core and battery.

You did not understand my statement. The Vega
heater core for a standard Vega WITHOUT A/C does not
have a 90 degree elbow other than that item they are
identical to the Cosworth. I just picked up a Cosworth
Heater core in November for one of my clients who
happened to own a radiator shop.

Regarding the
hoses there are hoses with 90 degree elbows. I don't
have the part number with me but I will post it
later.

Tim, what you're saying is the Standard Vega with
air has the same core as the Cosworth, I didn't
realise you were talking about a reg. Vega.

So if
I would have ordered the core for a Vega with A/C I
would have the elbow on it.

Too late now, but
that's OK, that part was easy.

Now for the 3/4"
hose on the top, I will definitely need a hose with
elbows on, I'll wait for your part
no.

Thanks

Al

Al, NO! the heater core for a Standard Vega
WITHOUT Air Conditioning is the same as a Cosworth except
for the 90 degree elbow.

The Heater core for
a Vega with Air is larger and the inlets are angled
differently and IT WILL NOT FIT!

Wow, you guys really know a lot about these cars,
I bought the core with the inlet/outlet straight no
elbows and I can live with that, now I need the top hose
with the elbows from J.C. Penny, and I'll be in
business.

Thank you all for your help.

A Vega heater core will work in a pinch. You will just have to find a
5/8" molded heater hose to make that 90 degree turn instead of the
bend in the cosworth heater core.

Those special molded hoses with the 90 degree bend in 5/8" & 3/4"
were once sold by HME and were also listed in the JC Whitney catalog
several years ago but I haven't checked lately.
