I have used both the stock 5.7" and 6.0" connecting rods in a Cosworth Engine.

I think Dick Myers used a 6.2" Connecting Rod in one of the Midget Engines.
Dick Baumhauer should have more information.

I have the external reinforcing plates used by Dick Meyers on his Cosworth
Midget Engines and if I am lucky I might be able to find the drawings.

Thanks Paul,
if you have any pics of the turn buckle, I love to see them.

Tim:

I was struck by the difference in piston skirt clearance
recommendations for standard bores and sleeved bores. I thought
about it for only a minute and it occurred to me that the greater
clearance specification for sleeved bores perhaps derived from the
differing expansion rates of steel and aluminum.

If further occurred to me that piston skirt coatings, which do
penetrate the pores of the piston material, and which some
manufactures claim allow the use of tighter clearances, might allow
for tighter clearances.

And then because I was on a roll, I thought that if one could reduce
the amount of heat loaded into the piston, thereby limiting the
amount of its growth due to thermal expansion, yet tighter
tolerances could be maintained.

Finally, in a rush of speculation, I considered the concepts of Flex
Honing the cylinders (<a href="http://www.flex-hone.com/Index.cfm?">http://www.flex-hone.com/Index.cfm?</a>
FuseAction=home.FlexHoneTools)and of the application of WSX (see
<a href="http://www.techlinecoatings.com/">http://www.techlinecoatings.com/</a>)to the cylinder bores after honing
and flex-honing, again to provide critical lubrication with
diminished clearances.

But you are right, a racer has to have some secrets, so don't tell
anybody. Mum's the word!

Would .003" to .0035" clearance remain your recommendation on a
sleeved engine if pistons with coated skirts were used?

Would a ceramic coating on the top of the piston, in addition to a
coating on the skirts, change your recommendation?

Just to add a little more information. Dick M. a midget racer and a
friend of Dick B.'s was utilizing a standard production CV block
sleeved with shouldered sleeves by HME. While in a heat race the
block seperated (split) horizontaly front to back above the oil
gallery, I believe the crack started in the front at the upper oil
pump mounting area. I can attest to the outcome as Dick gave the
block to me. He was able to push the sleeves from block as they were
partially exposed in the top half of the block. I believe this was an
methanol motor running hilborn injection with a lightened crank, long
rods and raised pin position Ross pistons. Dick B. can clarify.I can
post digital pictures if interested. There was also an article in off
road magazine about a CTC powered sand rail. I spoke to the owner
from the article and he told me he had split his block the same way.
There were at least two other racers (Pikes Peak and Bonneville) who
used girdles at the pan rail to strenthen the block with an nearly
filled top of block rather than open deck. Dick M.'s later midget
used a unique plate and turnbuckle arrangement. I can go into more
detail if your interetsed. Paul

I assume that with each rod length change, the pin
location in the piston must move a similar dimension.
What were the 12.5:1s designed for? Jim

Jim

We need to be more specific with this conversation.

You are inquiring about the 12.5+ to 1 VEGA High Compression custom made Arias
Pistons and I have been talking about the Factory High Compression COSWORTH
VEGA Pistons (I also have a set of Arias Pistons for the Cosworth Vega).

Here are the differences:

The Vega Piston has a compression (deck) height of 1.500", The Cosworth Vega
Piston has a compression height of 1.7325"

The Vega Dome Piston is designed for the Vega 2 Valve Configuration where the
Cosworth Vega Dome Piston is designed for Cosworth 4 Valave Configuration.

The Cylinder Head Volume on the Vega Head is about twice the size of the
Cosworth Vega - 76 CC (I think) for the Vega vs 40.50 CC resulting in VERY
different dome configuratons.

The Factory High Compression pistons were set up for the standard 5.7"
Connecting Rod. Although I have a set which were apparently custom made for Bob
Higman (who was responsible for most of the high performance modifications in
the Power Manual) which are set up for a 5.85" Connecting Rod and wire pin
retainers.

In addition the Factory High Compression Pistons actually yield about a 10.8 to
1 when using a thin head gasket. The 12.5 to 1 is only if the head is "O"
ringed and NO head gasket is used.

Try a 76 to 80 Monza with 7.5" Ring Gear (which should be all Monza's).

Hey are you going to be at the Round Up? You could bring your CV down and maybe
find a buyer, someone to take the car on consignment or trade up for a "Hotter"
Cosworth.

Good Luck

Good Afternoon!
Just wanted to post a follow up on this question. I found a shop in Balch
Springs, just outside of Dallas that did the Zinc plating for me. $20!!
Excellent work, even better prices! He has offered to strip the clear off
my bumpers, polish and re-clear coat them for $70 each. Since he has been
in business many years i think i'm going to trust him to do the work and
make it look good. Can't find a place locally to re-do the brite dip
anodizing, but from what he tells me mine really don't need it. The name of
the shop is below. BTW, he does out of state business as well. He had an
order in from Kansas City and another from Pennsylvania somewhere when i
picked up my part. Thanks for the help!

Subject: [Cosworth Vegas] Re: Painting coating or treating a fuel filler
neck?

Almost any organic coating is either going to be worn away by abrasion
from the fuel filler nozzles or eventually attacked by the gasoline.

My recommendation would be to take it to a plating shop, have it
pickled in acid to derust it, then zinc plated. They usually change
by the pound and have a minimum charge, but you might be able to find
a place that will throw it into another lot for a nominal charge or
maybe even do it for free if you show them pictures of your vintage
car and beg. ;)

The other alternative is to seek out one of those processes used to
restore fuel tanks. They are some kind of coating and some radiator
shops do this work. I've heard mixed results on these coating
processes, but if you've got a badly rusted fuel tank and can't buy a
replacment, it appears to be about the only game in town.

Is there still time for a newbie to get in on the deal? My car is in
fantastic shape, just NO hood pad! Please let me know A.S.A.P. Thanks!

Dear mrplow582001? and all CVOA Hood Pad Buyers,

Here are latest updates on the project:

1. Yes, it is a go, as stated in latest CV Magazine.

2. I was called buy manufacturer in January about concerns for the
curves at the "raised middle area". We felt it best to get the
designer an actual hood (which I personally delivered on 1/17).

3. As of today, estimates to have the production sample for us (CVOA)
to approve is later in March. After our approval, it would be expected
to take about three weeks to make the order of 250.

4. It was originally expected to have finished in late February. Extra
delay is result of time needed to make the multi-plane curves which
was not observed with the original hood pad we sent. No additional
costs are expected. So I would expect Pads in hand mid-April.

5. I like to note after visiting the manufacturer that it is no doubt
a top notch business. After seeing some of their other hood pad work
might I even dare to say, these (the Hood Pads) are going to be too
nice to install on a Vega (yes even the Cosworth)! HA HA

Sincerely,
Mike Rupert
