The more exhaust system backpressure, the more improvement the
reindexing will provide, but even with zero backpressure the
reindexing will improve the torque curve from end to end.

The most noticeable performance attribute of the reindexing is the
smooth 900 RPM idle and docile low speed operating characteristics.
Wanna lug from 1000 revs in top gear - go ahead, no problem. It 'll
pull. In first gear I can drag my car down with the brake to 200 RPM
in first gear, and it just keeps chugging along at less than walking
speed - great for heavy traffic. I tried this test with a new
Minicooper and it stalled at about 600 RPM. (BTW, the 2700 pound
Minicooper with the natually aspirated 1600 cc engine is a STONE!)

The primary purpose of the reindexing is to reduce the excessive
overlap, which was used to control NOX. The more overlap and higher
the exhaust back pressure, the more exhaust residual is present for
the next cycle (which means less fresh charge), particularly at part
throttle, because at part throttle the total pressure difference
between the exhaust side is absolute exhaust pressure minus absolute
inlet pressure.

The other benefit of the reindexing is the delayed closing of the
inlet valve. Of the four valve timing events the point at which the
inlet valve closes has the most dramatic effect on the torque curve.
A latter closing inlet valve shifts the torque curve up
the rev scale which means more high rev power. The less overlap
reduces the excess exhaust gas residual at low revs, which more than
offsets the loss of low end torque due to the later closing inlet
valve, so the reindexing results in a net improvement across the range
as does a reduction in exhaust back pressure.

Regardless of exhaust back pressure reindexing the cams will yield
better idle and low speed operation, better throttle response, better
fuel economy, more WOT power across the range, and the revs don't
hang up when you shift, so you can knock of perfectly smooth, quick
upshifts, and the engine responds more quickly to throttle blips when
downshifting.

Reindexing the cams shifts the torque curve up the rev scale, and less
exhaust backpressure shifts the torque curve up the lb-ft scale. The
two are additive.

Duke

Look in the Chevy Power Manual (the one I am looking at is the 4th eddition)
page 4-10 under Valves, Springs and Retainers:

"The production valves may be polished on the under head and the ridge (Lip)
removed just above the seat face"

The production intake valve has a noticable ridge or lip which probably
disrupts the air flow into the cylinder. The modern stainless steel valves do
not have the ridge and the SI Stainless Valves are swirll polished on the under
head side.

Tim,
do you know if that manual is in print? Is there a part number on it?
I'd like to buy one.
Thanks

The older edditions with the Cosworth Vega Engine are no longer in print and
seems like the only place to find them is on ebay.

We ran into a similar situation in Virginia. It seemed
more like another Government mandated jobs program. It
was amazing what was worn out when you got fix what
you found or certified fixing what someone else found.
If the government weren't the driver, it might be
thought of extortion. I gues just a little pent up
anger. Jim

Subject: [Cosworth Vegas] Re: Painting coating or treating a fuel filler
neck?

Almost any organic coating is either going to be worn away by abrasion
from the fuel filler nozzles or eventually attacked by the gasoline.

My recommendation would be to take it to a plating shop, have it
pickled in acid to derust it, then zinc plated. They usually change
by the pound and have a minimum charge, but you might be able to find
a place that will throw it into another lot for a nominal charge or
maybe even do it for free if you show them pictures of your vintage
car and beg. ;)

The other alternative is to seek out one of those processes used to
restore fuel tanks. They are some kind of coating and some radiator
shops do this work. I've heard mixed results on these coating
processes, but if you've got a badly rusted fuel tank and can't buy a
replacment, it appears to be about the only game in town.

I remember 1975 as a very dark year. My family sold Chrysler products at
the time, and i had gone to the shop to see the new Chargers and
Challengers, Cudas and Road Runners, Dusters and Demons etc.... My Uncle
pointed to a big dorky Cordoba/Fury body and i saw this auful sunburst
script on the spare tire hump of a trunk, it said: ROAD RUNNER!!!
NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Thank goodness for the Trans Am and the
Cosworth or 1975 and 6 would have been a complete wash IMHO!

Subject: [Cosworth Vegas] Re: NADA CV Pricing

It seems to me that if the CV would be a 1969 model it would be more
valuable, anything between 73 and 80 or later seems to be low value,
even though I see some pretty weird prices on some models.

I think the CV came at the wrong time in the boring era like Duke
mentionned about the 5 mph bumper for example. (I'll never forget the
first time I saw a brand new 73 Chevelle!!!).

So back to my first question, can we put the 3 levels of price for a
Cosworth in print here as a reply to my question?

Duke, if you have them will you share with me?, you gave me the high,
of $7450 but what are the other 3 levels?

My opinion is there are cars selling for $9-10k and I think the $7450
is low, but this is only my opinion.

As a newbie myself i can attest to what duke is saying. Granted, i had the
car when i joined but all of the things i have learned from back issues of
CVOA and the Twin Cam Times portfolio he mentioned have been invaluable!!
Once you have read or scanned most of these sources you will be a well
informed buyer, not to mention ready to tackle your new vehicle from the
first day!

Subject: [Cosworth Vegas] Re: I'm so Confused

You have a lot of good questions. In order to make an intelligent buy
you must educate yourself.

Join CVOA, and purchase the Twin Cam Times portfolio from them - over
200K words on the history and technology of these cars, including
recommended maintenance, problem areas, and thorough explanations of
the various CV mechanical and electronic/electrical systems. Also buy
the CV Shop manual supplement form Helm, Inc.

Keep an eye on CV ads in the Club magazine and go to the Roundup next
summer. Maybe by that time you will be sufficiently knowledgeable to
make an intelligent buy.

You have too many questions for me to answer, but as an overall
guideline, my recommendation to you is to pay top dollar for the best
car you can find, as close to original showroom conditon as possible.
The car you buy will have extensive records on both its origin,
maintenance and repair record, ownership history, location, and use.
You will spend in the range of $5-9K

On the other hand you can buy a two or three thousand dollar CV that
needs work. You will cause damage to it by trying to fix things
because you don't really know and understand the car, and the
professionals you pay will do more damage because they don't under
stand the car either. Or you might be able to find a professional who
can really restore a worn CV to "very good" condition. It will cost
you in the range of $10 - $25, and you will have one of the nicest CVs
around, worth about $7K.

Your choice!

Duke
