Tire question

Postby h-bot » Mon Oct 21, 2002 10:11 am

I found only 2 brands available in 205/60 on this side of the border .

Radial T/A's or Dunlop GT Qualifier.

T/A's are $91 Can. (Tire Rack are $62)

Dunlop's are $100 Can. (Tire Rack $44).

My question is Dunlop is cheaper in the US than T/A's and here it's
the other way around.

Price is close enough for me to pick either one, now is Dunlop a
better tire or is BFG T/A a better choice?

I never heard of Dunlop on this board yet and my only experience with
them was back in 1979 on my 68 Charger and can't remember how good or
bad they were, any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Al

Al,

The Radial T/A's are a mediocre tire at best, I would go with the
Dunlop. It is not my overall choice for a 13" tire, but it isn't a
bad overall street tire. Since I autocross my car, the tires I use
are DOT approved gumball tires like Hoosier, Kuhmo, Yokohama's,
etc..... not really suitable for regular street use.

Kevin.

Unfortunately most of the better summer high performance 205/60R-13s
are gone. You can still buy DOT legal racing tires in this
size from Kumho and Toyo.

I don't think either of the tires you listed are very good.
Sumitomo still offers an H-rated summer high performance tire in that
size, the HTR 100, but I think it was recently replaced by the HTR
200.

I agree with Duke about the tires. The Radial T/A is a so-so tire
at best - in the past they were known for below average straight
line adhesion, poor rain performance, and below average lateral
adhesion. The tread pattern shown in the tire rack's ad is
different, so there may have been improvements. The Dunlop GT
qualifier is slightly better, and of those two tires, perhaps the
best overall choice.

I had forgotten that Sumitomo still makes a 205 60 13. I have HTR 4
205 55 16 Sumitomo's on my daily driver, and have been pleased with
their overall performance, and at $ 40 US for the HTR 200 205 60 13
size, that seems like the best choice, if you can get them...

The other options in the 13" size are the competion tires, like the
Hoosiers, Kuhmo's, and some others like the 215 50 13 inch tires
like the Yokahama A032. They don't last a long time on the street,
but boy do they stick.

Good luck Al,

Kevin.

PS don't try to drive any of these tires in the snow. All of them
would be truely putrid in the snow.... If you want a
recommendation for Snow tires (for any vehicle), I have one ->
Bridgestone Blizzak!.
Kevin.

Tire question

My friend Richard is running both the BFG and DGTQ 205/60/13s on
several 2nd gen HBody cars. I have driven both on long trips from
Detroit to Clearwater, FL. We ran both on some CVs we owned in the
late 80s. The BFG is deffinately a lesser quality tire and lesser in
performance. It is a rougher, noisier running tire. But not a bad
street tire. The Dunlop is a smoother running tire. You can tell the
difference in manufacturing quality. They feel very good under the
car. Really nice at high speed. Smoooooth. They do have a lot of roll
on turns, but then - they grab real well. These are very good street
tires while giving a good degree of performance. They deffinately are
not junk. It is a matter of application. The price is right, too. The
choice is yours.

Tire question

Thank you all for your opinions, I did check on the Tire Rack's web
site before asking and saw what was available, then checked around
to see which one I could by here in Canada, and that is how I came
up with these 2 choices. All of the other brands are not available
in these sizes, I would have to buy then from the US, I'm flying
there next week, but I can't bring back 4 tires, it wouldn't make
sense.

So based on your replies, I guess I'll go with the Dunlops, funny
they cost so much less then BFG's in the USA and here they cost
more???

As for Kevin, I do run Blizzak's on my Z28 and Jimmy and wouldn't go
out in the winter with anything else, especially here, we're on ice
from the first snow fall until spring and I do agree, Blizzak is the
best, I've had them since 1994.

I won't drive the CV in the winter, I have more reliable options
that have a block heater and posi-traction and traction control,
even 4WD when my wife's traveling with me or when I can steal my
Jimmy from her.

Vega is not good in the snow, too light in the back, plus it came
from AZ and has never seen salty roads, so might as well keep it
that way.

And to Art, if you're reading, no the CV bug hasn't hit me yet, it's
like the stock market right now, until it's worth a little more than
I have into it, the bug won't bite.

As long as I can't justify spending anything on it, it won't change,
it doesn't piss me off anymore though, and that is a good thing, I
can driving now without getting frustrated.

Tire question

You may want to search a little more than the Tire Rack website. My
brother works in the tire business, and this is what he came up with
in about five minutes this morning:

205/60/13:
Dunlop GT
BFG Comp T/A
BFG Radial T/A
Kuhmo Victoracer v700 (DOT Race tire)($96)
Pirelli P-5000 (T rating, not very good)
Yokohama AVS Intermediate (closeouts)
Toyo Ra-1 (DOT Race tire)
Falken ZE 502
Falken ZX 60

215/50/13:
Kuhmo ECSTA V700 (DOT Race tire)($95)
Yokohama A032R($120)

There were also many tires in the 175/70 and 185/70 range for those
wanting to maintain a more stock appearence.

Don't overlook the Race tires, I run the Yokohama A032R 235/40/17
($120 for 13") on my GT Vega, and have over 9,000 miles on them, many
of which come from outrunning Porsches at the track. If I hadn't of
just sold this car, I would have expected 20,000 miles out of them.
This is a great tire, excellent wet traction, and it doesn't throw
gravel when it's warm like some of the other race tires (ahem...Kuhmo
V700). They still have well over half tread left (I didn't shave
them). The Kuhmo grips better, but will likey result in about 5000
miles, although my brother has well over 10,000 (225/55/15) on his,
which he drives on daily. They do like to throw gravel, they get real
sticky when hot. The ECSTA ($135ish) will be my next tire, it got
rave reviews by Grassroots Motorsports this month in a side by side
comparison. The tire is pushing the limits of a 6.5 inch rim however.
I am hoping that any rubbing that usually occurs with 205 tires will
be offset by the stiffer sidewall of the race tire design. I have run
Falken tires on all of my Vegas until now, they are decent grip for
cornering, and get good wear. They are inexpensive as well, about $64
each last time I checked.

There are some other tires out there, I will have to get the info on
them later. It depends on what you like in a tire I guess. I like to
get the best performance I can on my Vegas, so I choose to run the
DOT race tires. Although I consider the A032R a sticky performance
tire instead of a race tire. I am looking forward to trying out the
ECSTA tires soon, and comparing them to the A032R. I may end up back
with the A032R next year.

I of course meant 6" rim, not 6.5", not sure where I got that from.
