Trust me, Jake. You DON'T need to "upgrade" the HEI. It's one of the
finest ignition systems ever designed and works just fine with OEM or
equivalent replacment parts, which are readily available and
inexpensive. Guys even use it on Ford engines, it's so good.
A complete rebuild of the HEI is not a bad idea and should cost no
more than $100 in parts - pickup coil, module, primary harness,
advance weight bushings, cap and rotor, and secondary wires. The OEM
coil or equivalent replacement provides about 76 millijoules of per
spark energy at up to 30 kilovolts, which is overkill being as how
reasonably serviceable sparkplugs only have about 10-12 KV breakdown
voltage.
If you think you have better engineering skills than the Delco guys
who designed the HEI, then design your own system. If not, just give
your 25+ year old HEI a good overhaul and spend you money on things
that really need to be improved.
If you have the TCT Portfolio, it has a very detailed article on the
HEI, which was also reprinted in Q4 1996 CVOA Magazine.
