According to the SCCA in thier official rulebook definitions --
SPOILER - A panel attatched to the body of a car at the front or
rear, intended to alter the airflow around or under that end of the
car when in motion.
AIR DAM - An air control device at the lower front of a car, intended
to divert some of the air which would normally pass under the car
when the car is in motion.
No definition for valence since it is a word traditionally used to
refer to cosmetic trim that have little or no function at speed.
Granted the SCCA is not the letter of the law, so that is why I used
physically descriptive terms and then applied labels to the to foster
ease of understanding. These terms are interchangable, however
spoiler can be used at both ends of the car. I remain confident of my
correct use of the terms valence, air dam and spoiler.
Chris is manufacturing the body color part that comes from the
factory spaning the distance from fender to fender below the bumper.
The 2 foot wide black plastic air deflector/dam/spoiler that is also
a factory part but broken on most Vegas is made by Dave Quarterman in
Canada. The new item in question is a three piece spoiler/dam/air
deflector that was offered through the parts department, and
advertised as a "spoiler" by GM.
Please review the previous posts as well as the picture link and it
will be quite evident what the new piece is that Chris is making.
