It recently came to my attention that effective January 1, 2003 1974
models are exempt from emission testing. I didn't think they would be
exempt until January 1, 2004.
Based on this, 1975 model CVs will be exempt January 1, 2004 and '76
models a year later.
I am due for an emission test and I thought it would be my second to
last, but it looks like this will be the last one.
Keep your fingers crossed, because there have been attempts to rescind
the exemption. Last year there was an attempt to reinstitute emission
tests for all CA registered vehicles back to 1966, which was the first
year that CA had tailpipe standards, but it was thwarted with the help
of SEMA.
The following text is from the CA emission test web site:
How old does a vehicle have to be to qualify for a smog exemption?
Vehicles with a year model 30 years old or older
are exempt from the smog certification requirements.
Example: The calendar year is 2003- 29 =
1974 exempt year model
The current calendar year minus 29 equals the
year model exempt from smog certification.
