New All Aluminum Chevy IRL Engine

I just read where Chevy is building an updated version of their Indy
engine. It will be all aluminum - including the cylinders! The
complete engine will weigh just 280# and develope 650hp. The very
short article did not mention what type of aluminum is being used.
Shadows of the Cosworth-Vega at the IRL. Who would of thunk?

From "<a href="http://www.autointell.com/News-2002/September-2002/September-">http://www.autointell.com/News-2002/September-2002/September-</a>
2002-3/September-18-02-p3.htm"

"The 2003 Chevy Indy V8 is 3 inches narrower, 3 inches shorter and 35
pounds lighter than the 2002 version. The 3.5-liter (214ci) engine
has an aluminum cylinder case, aluminum cylinder heads with four
valves per cylinder, dual overhead camshafts and sequential
electronic fuel injection. It produces more than 675 horsepower and
weighs 280 pounds."

I'd say it will still use steel bore liners & o-ring seals between
the head & bores.

My guess for aluminum alloy would be 356.

Hey Bob, good to hear from you. I was stating the info from memory,
so thanks for the article quote and link. I will try to find the
article I read and double check it. I'm sure it stated aluminum
cylinders and not steel sleeves. That is why the article got my
attention.
